We have our rainwear packed. Cameras are in dry bags. This week, to film the first episode in a video series we’re launching in April called “Off The Map,” a few of us here at GearJunkie will be trekking a lonesome shoreline in northern California on a backpacking trip. Called the Lost Coast, this remote stretch through the state’s soggy Mendocino and Humboldt counties features endless Pacific views, a road-less wilderness, bears, mountain lions, secret surfing spots, and giant green mountains tumbling into the sea.

“Off The Map,” a video series that’s being sponsored by Yakima, will highlight five remote wilderness adventures around the country. The Lost Coast, which is known for its long empty stretches, rogue waves, and impassable points at high tide, we know will make an apt introduction to the series.

GearJunkie is signing off for the week. We’ll be back Friday. Our backpacks are packed. We have tide charts printed out. Wish us luck out there on the long beach hike! We’ll be gunning to make the points before the sea washes in. We’ll report back after the long walk on the other side.
