Video gives inside look at Life of climber Chris Sharma
December 10, 2012, 8:18 am / Categories: Climbing
He screams like a ninja on overhanging limestone, pulling incredible 5.15 moves. He sweeps out a dusty swimming pool at his house in Spain. He gets philosophical more than once, then kayaks down a river and flips his boat. In a new video from Prana, “Chris Sharma: Intrinsic,” we get a peek inside the life of arguably the world’s best rock climber. Says Sharma about his day job of climbing obscure and increasingly impossible routes near the end, “One [route] has a little bit smaller holds than the other one, and, ya know, in the big picture it’s all just, like, meaningless, but in the moment it gives us purpose in our life.”

@Ryan, if you’re climbing 5.15Cs and Ds, I’d say you can do whatever makes you happy, as long as it is only your vocal cords at risk. Heck, if you’re doing 5.5s and you feel like yelling or grunting, why not? If we’re going to talk ethics, though, what I’m not too sure about is the use of the “R” word to describe a behavior you personally disagree with. Just sayin’.

I want to start a new ethics trend. Cedar Wright showed us the bolt wars are over. Let’s now fight about how retarded it is to yell while climbing. Sure, climb 14d and yell your little heart out. But a boulder problem at the gym? What’s next? People bringing radios to the crag and playing Skrillex for hours on end? Oh wait… I think I’ll take my curmudgeon-y, grouchy, old ass back out to the climbs with 3+ mile approaches. People don’t yell and scream out there.
