My son just finished Marine Basic Training in San Diego. He is now off to Infantry school and then additional specialized training before field deployment. Since he does not have options for boots, I am looking for recommendations for boot insoles and socks.

He will be doing multi-day hikes with heavy loads in areas with changing elevation. It will be both hot/cold and dry/wet.

Any recommendations for boot insoles and socks to maximize performance and comfort for an Infantry Marine?

I would recommend superfeet insoles. They offer great support, I wont run/hike without them.

for socks I would recommend smartwool hiking socks either mid or lightweight. wool feels good, wicks moisture, doesn't retain odors. awesome stuff.

I also like the brand Sole for insoles. They mold to your feet and tend to be better off when you are not on concrete. I find Superfeet are best for banging around on concrete.

Also for socks anything Merino Wool is great. Smartwool is very popular, so is REI's hiking socks, and the Wigwam Comfort Hiker are pretty good. Teko is one brand that I like as well. I have also heard about some people that have been deployed that like ski socks because they can be thin and come all the way up to right below the knee. These are good to use with combat boots.

I agree with using Superfeet. I use them for everyday tennis shoes, running, and work. Great arch support and heel cup keeps side-to-side motion at a minimum.
