Gear Junkie AWOL in Belize

Signing off from the blog, and life in general, for a few days to head south seeking tropical air and mountain adventures in the interior of Belize, where the Mayan Mountains jut thousands of feet up from the jungle.

Navigable rivers and streams like the Macal drop through valleys, providing canoe and kayaking venues. I’ll be based at Black Rock Lodge for most of the trip, which is an eco-lodge in the dense rainforest above the Macal River in the Mayan Mountains. Hiking, caving, bird watching and animal tracking are on the itinerary. Will do a blog update or two if I can find a signal and log in somewhere far in the jungle brush. . .

If you’re looking for an all-knowing guide to Southern Belize, the least developed region of the country, look no further than Percy Gordon, aka. “King of the Howlers.” He’s the man, Jack Hanna thougth so too, and he knows the jungles, mangroves and reefs like the back of his hand. Percy cured my wife’s monster mosquito bites with tree bark (almost instantly), showed us how refreshing minty-flavored termites can be after hiking through the jungle, and took us ‘cuda fishing on his day off. Did I mention he’s the man!?

Part of my heart is in Belize—I studied ecology there for a month a few years ago. It’s another world in itself, and I look forward to reading about your adventures. Hope you have a chance to check out the cayes, where the water is so blue and the hippie-types/eco-tourists hang out. If you make it to any local scenes you should order a “pantie ripper” cocktail, its great! Plus, I personally recommend using a lemon-eucalyptus based bug spray over the traditional DEET—the natural stuff surprisingly works way better!
cheers
