Rowing a dory in the Grand Canyon is considered by some the most coveted job in the world. It can take 20 years of paying your dues to earn a seat on one of these legendary wooden boats.

“It’s definitely easier to get a PhD than it is to get a dory here in the Grand Canyon,” says guide John Shocklee in this video, which follows up-and-coming rower Amber Shannon as she works her way from the baggage boat to a dory.
