iPhone 4 Rugged Case

“Just drop it — as long as you are using a Ballistic case.” That’s a tagline from Ballistic, a Sunrise, Fla., company that makes cases to protect gadgets including the Apple iPad and iPhone.
This week, to coincide with the launch of Apple’s new iPhone, the company has debuted what it is calling “the world’s most rugged protective case for the iPhone 4.”
The iPhone 4 Ballistic HC Series Case, which costs $49.99, has an interchangeable outer “gel skin” layer and a built-in screen protector. Internal seals keep dirt and other corrosive materials out of an iPhone’s exposed ports.
The company touts the case as “engineered with superior shock absorption materials.” It has four layers to offer security from “drops, fingerprints, scratches, dust and well. . . life in general,” as the company puts it. http://www.goballisticcase.com

DONT BUY THIS CASE!!!!! I had the case for approximately two weeks not and it is a piece of junk. On the YOUTUBE video’s it looks great but in real life it sucks. After two weeks of use the lip area where the ear piece is at the exterior cover is located at is stretching and becoming loose. With this in mind I dont put it in the holster anymore since I am afraid the phone is going to fall. Also when I received my case it was damaged I emailed and never got a response, I then called spoke with some guy and told me they would replace the front cover since it was damaged and they never did. I told the guy at balisitc I would send him a pic of the damage screen cover and he never sent confirmation email of receiving it. Balistic hasp oor cust service,I have now ordered a otter box case. I have one my work phone and had one on my iphone 3gs. Otter box has great cust service and 50 bucks is a lot of money for a phone case. Let me see balistic gives me a refund.
The only problem I have with this case is that it doesn’t have a cover for the headphone and noise canceling mic. I have a friend that just bought an otterbox case and he is disappointed with it. People be happier if Ballistic had a case that had covers for the speakers and headphone jack,
My first impressions were, it’s a very rugged well-built case with a very military look and feel.
The iPhone4 fits inside with just the slightest amount of play and when the lid is snapped on it feels like the case has been molded to the phone.
The Ballistic HC has integrated screen protector which is not removable and a very Sturdy looking belt holster which will lock on to the case with or without the additional rubber skin in place. The belt holster appears to latch onto the case very well and doesn’t give the impression that the phone would slip out on its own. I do not use belt holsters and have not giving this one any real world test.
What I like
No silly window over the Apple logo. (sorry Steve if you want me to advertise for you I have a contract you will need to sign)
Removable skin that provides additional protection when required but easily removable when not.
Holster holds case securely with or without additional skin.
Dust covers over all ports except the speaker and microphones
What I do not like
The sides of the case is very high relative to the screen and interfere with pressing keys on the outside edge and when sliding objects to the next page.
Integrated screen protector scratches very easy and cannot be replaced. (I presume I cannot get a new cover just by asking for it)
The hole for the front camera needs to be a bit bigger. ( I see a slight haze in the bottom corners)
The hole for the thirty pin connection needs to be bigger so that the connector can go all the way in.
Over all it’s a very sturdy case and would be better still with some refinements.
Great rugged case. I especially like that you can remove the outter cover and still have top notch protection. The screen cover does scratch easily and I had the constant “oil slick” issue both with and without an additional stick on screen protector. But because the scratching was degrading screen quality, I ended up removing the built in screen protector (it’s just glued in the case…comes off very easily). However, I bought the Otterbox Defender case and am using it now. So far no oil slick or scratching. Depending on your preferences, both do a top notch job of protecting your phone. Compared to just the naked phone, they both are bulky though. That’s the price you pay for this level of protection.
I was a die hard Otterbox fan with the 3G case and I still have the Otterbox for my iPad. However their redesign of the iPhone 4 Case ruined it IMHO.
They centered the belt clip and made the unit lock in sideways. If you carry it horizontal, it’s great, but if you rotate it vertically, the centered clip makes the top hang off of your body. Not to mention it’s completely awkward getting it in and out of the case if it’s carried vertically.
I’ve been carrying the Ballistic case for weeks now and love it. I will second the thoughts on the edges being a little high when trying to access real estate at the edge of the screen. And I have the oily spot. I’ve put on rubber gloves and cleaned the inside and front my iPhone 4 with alcohol pads several times. Within a day or so the oil spot is back.
I look at the oil spot as it being better than a broken screen, which I would have had by now.
There are a couple other rugged cases I’m curious about, but this one is definitely an option to the Otterbox Defender for the iPhone 4.
The oily spots can be fixed by applying a very fine layer of baby powder between the case and the screen. I noticed it at the store when my phone was first put in the case. The workers there seem to have dealt with this a lot, and a month later the oil spots have still not returned.
Bought the Otter – couldn’t stand the belt clip location/position and it didn’t look or feel “right”. The Ballistic is like a tank, looks cool (at least to guys) and protects like a champ. Put a matte finish screen protector on and there will be NO OILY spots. Even with the HC screen protector and a matte protector, the touch screen is responsive. Agree that edges are a bit difficult – live with it, because it is worth the protection and rugged look.
Ballistics say HC is not available. It’s been 2 weeks since I filled a form on their website. Not even an acknowledgment, forget a response or a promise of when it’d be available. I called and they said, not available, just fill the form. As commenter “dpi” above pointed out, this raises a flag about potential customer service issues. Are people just hyping this b*tch too much?
I recently ordered and returned one of these “ballistic” cases for my iPad. There was nothing ballistic or special about it. A cheap piece of plastic with a rubbery bendable outer edge. Truly a disappointment. If you are looking for rugged, don’t bidder with this. At $52 plus with shipping it’s way overpriced. Plenty of good cases on eBay for a fraction o that. I got stuck with the freight both ways plus they have the gall to tell me it takes up to two weeks to process my refund to my Amex card. Ridiculous! Stay away!
