'Knife Junkie' Video: 10 Blade Types
July 31, 2012, 8:59 am / Categories: Camping, Miscellaneous
As the “live” version of our wildly popular “10 Knife Types” article from earlier this month, this video features Ron Green, owner of knife-sharpening business The Strop Shop, and John Zacherl, a self-professed knife freak. Watch as Zacherl and Green demonstrate and dissect 10 common blade types.
—This video is a part of GearJunkie’s “Day of the Knife” project, which includes content about knives as well as giveaways and a reader-submission contest for a chance to win $5k in gear! Go to the site here for more info and to sign up for a chance to win.

I’m a fan of the site, and I can understand gearjunkie’s need for sponsorship dollars. Most of the time it doesn’t interfere with content— in this case, it surely does. There are dozens of major knife manufacturers out there, and Gerber’s knives are mediocre at best (in terms of steel quality, fit & finish, and design). If you’re looking for representative knives, try including more Benchmade, spyderco, Leatherman, or even Kershaw. This kind of blatantly subsidized video is a blow to your ethos. If you want to maintain your reputation as an unbiased review blog, you shouldn’t pass off this Gerber advertisement as a informative video.
