The REI Flashback Daypack

Inspired by vintage gear, a new daypack from REI called the Flashback Daypack gives a nod to the brand’s hiking heritage.

The Flashback is built with one main compartment that cinches closed. Inside, a sleeve and a small zippered pocket offer organizational options.

The Flashback costs $45 and is available at REI.

The REI Flashback pack

In the few weeks I’ve been wearing this pack on bike commutes and short hikes, it’s become my go-to bag.

The outer is made of CORDURA nylon. It’s not waterproof, but will keep things dry if you get caught in a light mist.

There are some drawbacks to the old school look: The adjustable shoulder straps are made of a seatbelt-type webbing; when fully loaded they tug uncomfortably. Minimal padding on the back means you feel hard items pressing through.

This pack isn’t meant for heavy loads. It’s just big enough to fit a rain jacket, lunch, and other small items.

But for a day hike or cross-town jaunt, I like to just toss my items into the main compartment, cinch it up, and head out the door.
