U.S. Snowboarding Team Uniforms

How do you create a uniform and outfit athletes in a sport like snowboarding that prides itself on individuality? You hand the reigns to the largest company in that world: Burton. For the XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the U.S. Snowboarding Team will don uniforms made by the Vermont-based company, who in turn tapped Olympic hopefuls like Mason Aguirre, Kevin Pearce and Louie Vito for feedback.

Burton’s Olympic Uniform

With a classy red, white and blue flannel pattern, the jacket is equal parts Seattle dive bar circa ’92 and Tommy Hilfiger sailing gear. And if the top is grunge-meets-yacht-rock, the bottom is dirty Jersey. If The Boss snowboarded, he’d definitely rock those faux-distressed jeans.

Olympic faux-distressed jeans snowboarding pants

Regardless of your view on this style, it’s a huge step up from the pinstriped garments from the last Winter Olympics, which conjured the Yankees home uniforms. Anyway, by the time you see these uniforms in action, which are made from GORE-TEX-based materials, they’ll just be a blur — Shaun White, an Olympic highly-likely, is already completing runs with three, double-flips! Some bling in the form of a Gold Medal is dang likely. And if there’s one thing that Springsteen and Burton can agree on it’s that a gold medal (or Grammy) makes any outfit look great.

F’ugly. Seriously.

Posted by jpea - 12/08/2009 09:31 PM

agreed. most snowboard outerwear turned a horrible corner maybe 5-8 years back, but maybe it’s just my age…

Posted by kp - 12/09/2009 01:54 PM

I’m with jpea, I think most snowboard outerwear stopped looking good a few years back. But considering whats out there today…this doesn’t look as bad as I expected. I’m just glad they’re not wearing skinny jeans.

Posted by DRyan - 12/09/2009 02:11 PM

I dont mind the jacket at all. I actually think its a solid combination of snowboard “fashion” and trying to integrate the US colors while still maintaining some class.

That said… seriously, Faux ripped jeans? Come on guys. You lost me there.

jackets ok, pants are ridiculous, totally lame

Posted by B'ride - 02/15/2010 02:52 PM

You do understand that they are shells that look like jeans…….. I like the whole layout……. And so does my 54 year old mom. She wants to get my son the whole getup!!! I’m just pissed she’s not getting me a set!!

Posted by Tina - 02/15/2010 04:19 PM

I feel like this is Von-douche meets Von-boardroom

Posted by KayP - 02/15/2010 07:51 PM

I think it mixes classic Americana with modern style.

The pants (which I thing are awesome) look exactly like Burton’s Grail Limited pant (the womens was the Maiden), denim and Gore-tex, which are totally unobtainable in the southern hemishpere, sold out everywhere that had them and must be one of the most sought-after bits of gear around. Or not around, damn them! So, pretty popular design, beat the DC sega and other denim-effect offerings hands down! IMHO of course…

love the jeans look. not everyone wants to go on the slope wearing the same stuff as their grandad

Posted by chad - 02/16/2010 04:30 PM

Those pants are brilliant. I don’t understand the hostility above. I’m getting some.

Posted by jon - 02/16/2010 10:10 PM

the whole uniform is ill. pants especially!

Posted by jpea - 02/17/2010 08:11 AM

the funny thing is that your grandad would probably be wearing his old torn-up jeans and a flannel ;)

Posted by Monica - 02/17/2010 09:34 AM

I love the pants looking at what has been worn at the pass Olympics I thought this rocked in comparison I liked the whole outfit. Let’s face it red, white and blue is not the easiest colors to come up with a great fashion statement.

I love to snowboard and this uniform is probably the most legit, awesome, sexiest (whatever you wanna call it) thing that Burton has ever done. LOVE IT.
