It’s easy to find a swimsuit that looks cute. It’s not so easy to find one that can handle the demands of an adventurer.

Women want a swimsuit that not only looks cute, but stays put, feels good, and can stand up to the rigors of saltwater, sun, and sand all summer long. Luckily the industry is taking note. Women can now find swimsuits that perform as good as they look, including these five swimwear gems.

From surfing to hiking to swimming laps at the pool, these suits stood out above the rest in rigorous testing. Not just once, but over and over for months on end. They stood up to the challenge with plenty of style, comfort, and versatility.

Check out this list of the best active swimwear and get ready for a summer of adventure!

Sea Hermosa Surf Suit ($135)

Sea Hermosa Surf Suit

Made in California by surfers for surfers, this one-piece is an active gal’s dream come true. Made from a polyester spandex blend, it provides UV protection and will keep its color and shape through years of saltwater use and abuse.

In testing we found that the best thing with this suit is it stays in place. You never have to mess with it. But that is a bit of a double-edged sword, as it’s also a little harder to change out of.

The classic-cut bottom and full-sleeve design means no more time wasted adjusting your suit. The fun prints and retro design bring a bit of glamor to the water.

Women seeking a more modest cut and full sun protection, paired with a bit of retro style, will enjoy this swimsuit.

Faherty Tavarua Top ($98) and Aruba Bottom ($88)

This suit suit is a multi-tasking hero. The Aruba Bottom easily converts from a high-waisted retro look to a swim skirt to a pair of classic bottoms with a ruched waist band.

I found the material easy to work with, and each style accessible and comfortable. Plus, the Tavarua Top has a criss-cross back, so you don’t have to worry about it pulling on your neck or digging into the shoulders (do note, though, that the top runs small. Order a size up for the best fit).

This suit would be especially good for those who want to vary the level of coverage easily.

Constructed of an innovative blend of recycled polyester and Lycra, and finished to withstand sun, salt and chlorine, this two-piece is sure to be a favorite.

Title Nine Plunge Tankini Top ($59) and Cannonball Boy Short Bottom ($54)

Looking for a bit more coverage, but don’t want to wear a one-piece? A tankini might be just what you need. Adjustable tie straps give this a halter aesthetic without any unwanted neck pinching.

The boy-short style bottom stays in place no matter the activity. We tested this one in a variety of conditions and found it perfect for a game of beach volleyball, wrangling the kids, paddling into the sunset, or catching the next big wave.

And to complete the look, you can even add a matching classic bottom, bikini top, and rash-guard.

Sensi Graves Reversible Colleen Top ($54) and Reversible Kyla Bottom ($50)

For those looking to show a bit more skin, this bikini is just the ticket. Designed by a professional kiteboarder, each of Sensi Grave’s swimsuits are built to stay put, feel great, and look awesome.

And after wearing this suit for months of swimming, surfing, and beach hiking, I can attest to the performance and comfort. This is among my favorite swimsuits of all time. Even in heavy beach break, I never had a problem with it slipping or coming loose.

For a cheeky style that actually stays put, you can’t go wrong with this swimsuit.

Patagonia Reversible One-Piece Kupala ($130)

Patagonia swimsuit

Not only are Patagonia swimsuits made with a comfortable mix of recycled polyester and spandex, but you can now shop worry-free knowing every suit is Fair Trade Certified. Woohoo! On top of that, this one-piece manages to offer full-coverage while still scoring major style points.

The hidden elastic under the bust provides extra support and the criss-cross straps keep everything in place. It really works, and is really comfortable for all kinds of active pursuits.

Made to be reversible, it’s like two suits in one. It’s perfect for active ladies looking to show a bit less skin and add a bit more versatility to the summer swim wardrobe.
