The Helly Hansen Trail Lizard HT is purported to be “light on its feet” as well as capable of “maintaining its comfort level while pounding out the hours on rough terrain.” If the HT is anything like its cousin model, the Trail Lizard, I’m believing the hype.

For the past few months, I have been wearing the warm-weather Trail Lizard for everything from short runs on the pumice trails near my home in Mammoth Lakes, to long hikes in Yosemite. The shoe proved to be durable, comfy and stable from the get-go.

The yet-to-be-released HT is a winterized version of the model I put to the test. It is built with a waterproof and breathable upper as well as overlays that guard against sharp rocks and roots. Its sole is made with a proprietary “tough and grippy” rubber compound.

If you’re looking for a versatile trail shoe or light hiker, the HT is worth considering. Fit-wise, my pair of size 11 Trail Lizards ran true to size and were moderate in width.

The Trail Lizard HT will be available in early October for about $100. www.hellyhansen.com
