Parts manufacturer Fox today recalled roughly 7,000 shock absorbers used on mountain bikes. The company cites injury risk, as the outer sleeve can rupture as you ride.

The voluntary recall, announced today, covers all model year 2016 and some 2017 FLOAT X2 rear shocks. Fox noted that the outer sleeve can rupture while riding, potentially contacting the rider or moving parts on the bicycle. This could lead to falls or injury.

Seven failed units have been reported, but no injuries so far.

Fox FLOAT X2 Recall

The $600 FLOAT X2 shock was sold both as an individual unit and in preinstalled assembly on numerous full-suspension mountain bike brands. Affected bikes include Diamondback, Trek, Giant, Scott, Orbea, and more.

Two models are included in the recall, the Performance series (top) and Factory series (bottom)

The units were sold between March 2015 and September 2016 and were not stamped with a “250 psi max” label. Bikes with the recalled shock retailed from $2,700 to $10,000.

Fox advises consumers to stop riding those bikes immediately and return them to the place of purchase for free repair. Find more information about the FLOAT X2 shock Fox’s Recall page.
