Did you know Maine has over 5,000 miles of coastline, including the 3,000-plus small islands dotting its shores? Along with evergreen forests and clear lakes, this gorgeous state has no shortage of stunning campgrounds for anyone searching for an idyllic retreat into nature.

Acadia National Park Campgrounds

Located mostly on Mount Desert Island, this 47,000-acre park is a hugely popular destination for New England campers. Home to rocky shores, evergreens, pristine lakes, and granite mountains, Acadia is nicknamed the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast.

It’s no wonder that our first three of Maine’s most popular campgrounds are in this park!

1. Seawall Campground

  • Location: 668 Seawall Rd., Southwest Harbor, ME 04679
  • Campsites: Nearly 200 sites, including 40 RV sites (non-electric), 25 tent-only sites, and 90 walk-in-only sites
  • Fees: $22 for a walk-in tent site, $30 for a standard site, and $60 for a group site

4. Sebago Lake State Park Campground

  • Campsites: 250 sites with electric hookups available, 17 sites reserved for hike-in only, 14 group sites available
  • Fees: $25/$35 for Maine residents/non-residents, $35/$45 for sites including water and electric hookups, $50 for group sites

A short 45-minute drive northwest of Portland, Maine, brings you to Sebago Lake State Park. This popular vacation destination for families offers a range of fun activities like fishing, boating, biking, and more.

5. Camden Hills State Park Campground

  • Location: 280 Belfast Road, Camden, ME 04843
  • Campsites: 107 sites, including 44 with water and electric, and up to 40 RV sites
  • Fees: $25/$35 for Maine residents/non-residents, $35/$45 for water and electric hookups, $50 for group sites

A 2-hour drive up the coast from Portland, Camden Hills State Park is a 5,710-acre park overlooking Penobscot Bay. For a more remote experience, you can hire a boat to shuttle you across the bay to Warren Island State Park.

6. Lily Bay State Park Campground

  • Fees: $20 for Maine residents, $30 for non-residents

In northwest Maine, Lily Bay State Park sits 1.5 hours’ drive east of the Canadian border. This beautiful campground offers spacious sites that look out onto Moosehead Lake. Aside from backcountry camping in Baxter State Park or staying at the privately run Wilderness Edge Campground, this site is the closest you’ll get to the stunning Mt. Katahdin.

7. Cobscook Bay State Park Campground

  • Fees: $20 for Maine residents, $30 for non-residents.

Located in easternmost Maine, Cobscook Bay State Park is only a 30-minute drive from the Canadian border. This secluded forest sits in the sheltered inlet of Broad Cove, which is home to rich wildlife. Here, you can witness the impressive tidal shifts of Whiting Bay, boasting an average rise of 24 feet!

8. Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping

  • Location: 134 Burnett Rd, Freeport, ME 04032
  • Campsites: 156 sites, including 3 cabins and tents for rental; many sites have water and electric hookups, and 9 walk-in-only sites are secluded in Quiet Cove
  • Fees: Most affordable sites for $20 (offseason) or $34 (peak season); hookups range from $45 to $60 depending on season and view

At Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping, you can fully engage with all nature has to offer. Take a walk through the organic garden, hang out in the barn with cows and sheep, or relax on a hayride. You can rent a bike, hike trails, or rent a kayak or canoes to go fishing!

9. Sandy Pines Campground

Location: 277 Mills Rd, Kennebunkport, ME 04046
Campsites: 280-plus sites, including RVs (some with water, electric, sewage, and cable!), and “glamping” sites
Fees: Tent sites start at $60 per night with a 2-night minimum.

The most southern of these campgrounds, Sandy Pines Campground is an hour’s drive south of Portland. This unique campground offers many fun ways to “glamp,” including rentals of RVs, wagons, A-frames, canvas tents, cottages, and even a VW Bus named Sunny Daze.

10. Mount Desert Campground

Headed back to the famous Acadia National Park for the final spot, Mount Desert Campground is nestled in the woods at the top of Somes Sound. This campground offers a boat launching dock as well as designated areas for swimming and fishing.
