UPDATE: Check out our compilation of 2014 Cyber Monday Deals here.
We covered Black Friday in all its outdoor-gear-buying glory last week in a post judiciously titled “SAVE HUGE BIG!” (Many of those Black Friday bargains are still valid, so check out that post if you haven’t already.) Now, another hallmark of the American consumer calendar is on our doorstep, November 28th, better known this year as Cyber Monday, and like its day-after-Thanksgiving cousin “CM” promises HUGE BIG! deals as well, including hundreds of outdoor items on sale or otherwise promoted with no-cost shipping, entrance into special contests, and even free gift cards (lookin’ at you, Moosejaw) with a purchase to get online shoppers to click and buy.
Where to begin your gear hunt on Cyber Monday? On what’s widely cited as the “biggest online shopping day of the year” maybe a click to a namesake website, CyberMonday.com, is a good place to start. This “official Cyber Monday website” highlights deals from more than 700 online retailers, most non-outdoors, but a few, ranging from EMS to Dick’s Sporting Goods, are in the realm of gear junkies in search of outdoors deals. CyberMonday.com has a section on sports and outdoors deals that gives links to CM bargains from The North Face, eBags, New Balance shoes, Sierra Trading Post, the hunt/fish/camp megamart Cabela’s, and a few more.
In the outdoors core, the big players online like REI and Backcountry have either Cyber Monday deals or holiday-theme sales going on, including REI’s Winter Sale, which has been running for a few days but ends on CM. You get free shipping on orders of $50 or more plus 30 percent off some stuff. At Backcountry, the Thanksgiving Sale is wrapping up, including deals and free shipping through Monday.
Climb High touts a “cyber Monday frenzy” with bargains like 25% off all Black Diamond gear and 25% off all camping equipment. OverStock is hawking heart-rate watches at good rates. Want a contest? Campmor’s Facebook page has a Cyber Monday Promo where you can win a year’s supply of Wigwam socks.
131 Hours is all you get for the big Altrec sale, which extends through Cyber Monday and grants 60% off plus an additional 20% off on some items — so that’s 80% off in total?? — with the deployment of the coupon code CYBERMONDAY11 at the point of purchase. Dang. These big bargains are available on Columbia softshell jackets, exercise tights, Patagonia dresses (yes, dresses), as well as Ruff Wear rain jackets for dogs!
Backwoods.com is giving away Osprey Transporter duffel bags with purchases over $99. “Extreme Savings!” are the guarantee from Sportsman’s Guide, including wildlife game cameras for $40 and base-layer shirts from (improbably?) Reebok said to be wicking and “damp-defeating” for $7.50 each (sold in two-packs only). That is extreme!
Sierra Trading Post has a contest, the weirdly self-referential “How much will Sierra Trading Post save customers on CYBER MONDAY?” contest, which will give away a $500 shopping spree. Or use coupon code SITESUPER1111 to get 20% off orders of $100 or more at the site.
Behemoth Amazon has myriad Cyber Monday deals. (“Black Friday may be over, but we’ve still got the party going. . .” the site touts.) Anyway, most of the stuff is not outdoorsy, but there is a very worthy GPS sale going on for CM, including the likes of the Magellan eXplorist 710 model for $399 (it goes for about $550 usually). Boots, telescopes, outerwear, portable fire pits, watches, and loads of other outdoorsy items are on sale at the big A as well right now.
Tahoe Mountain Sports touts 20 to 70 percent off its entire inventory. “Amazing Gifts for Everyone!” — that’s the claim at Campsaver, where the shop’s Door Buster Deals involve up-to-75%-off-type finds on gear from Prana (Amadeus crew shirt for $13.74); an Osprey courier bag ($44.48); Mammut Bionic Keylock Carabiner ($6.48); and a backpacking pan, the MSR Blacklite Frypan, for $12.32.
That about does it on this side for now. Readers, let us know what other outdoors bargains you find. Cyber Monday is no doubt a unique day to virtually procure goods and gear you need or might want to gift over the holidays ahead. Happy clicking, happy shopping, and to all a good night!
