Six miles of mountain running is a feat. Throw unique and taxing obstacles into the mix — several which involve beer kegs! — and you’ve got the Extreme Wolverine Challenge, a new obstacle race series based in Massachusetts and with events scheduled around the East.

We’re signed up for the organization’s July 13 event, to be held at Stratton Mountain in Vermont. The race will have around 20 unique obstacles, including a dumpster crawl, keg carry, and something called “walking the plank.”

In between the obstacles racers sprint on trails, uphill, and through mud at Stratton Mountain. The endurance-meets-strength format will be familiar to anyone who’s been paying attention to events like the Tough Mudder or Spartan Race.

Many Extreme Wolverine competitors take part as members of six-person teams. To help build friendly rivalries, teams compete in divisions such as citizen, police, fire, corrections, and military.

The Extreme Wolverine Challenge then donates $5 from each entry to a charitable giving pool given to the winning team’s charity of choice. The Challenge also donates 75 percent of profits to charity.

A unique offering, Extreme Wolverine will also host a high school event on June 15. Freshmen through seniors in high schools can sign up as teams to run uphill and into the woods for the challenge.
