It’s been a long 21 years since we last saw a new Toyota Supra on U.S. shores. The fifth-generation 2020 Supra just made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will show up on your local Toyota dealer’s lot this summer.

It’s been a long time since Toyota offered something truly sporty to the American market. The 2020 Supra aims to change all that with its small dimensions, low center of gravity, 50/50 weight balance, and rear-wheel-drive, performance-focused chassis.

Toyota Supra Performance

The 2020 Supra is a true street sports car and weekend track day weapon. It has 325 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque on tap from its turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. The Supra puts all that power to the wheels through an eight-speed auto transmission with paddle shifters.

This car will be quick and fun. With a projected 0-60 mph time of just 4.1 seconds, the 2020 Supra will be the quickest Toyota-branded production vehicle ever. It electronically limits the top speed to 155 mph. That should be plenty for some good fun on the track!

The car has two driving modes: Normal and Sport. Sport Mode reduces traction and stability control intervention, sharpens throttle response, increases steering weight, makes shifts crisper, amplifies exhaust sound, and offers a more aggressive active differential tuning. The driving modes also adjust the responsiveness of the standard Adaptive Variable Suspension. Basically, Sport Mode makes the new Supra more aggressive — and fun!

Behind the Wheel

The instrument panel behind the small-diameter steering wheel is a high-definition color display. It projects a large-diameter 3D meter dial, which looks to float over the display. The single-meter design is quick and easy to read, which is essential for performance driving. When even more concentration on the road is required, Toyota is offering a full-color heads-up display in the new Supra.

The center console is tight on the driver and provides a roomy feel to the passenger. It also offers leg bolstering/kneepads for both passengers to help keep you in place when cornering G’s increase.

The sport seats also help keep you from sliding around in the cockpit. The seats feature a narrow main section, shoulder bolstering, and an integrated head restraint. The 3.0 Premium option adds heat and leather trim to the seats.

Of course, the new Supra will offer all the safety, luxury, and convenience aids of a high-quality modern car. You can get things like adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, an 8.8″ touchscreen multimedia system display, and a 12-speaker JBL audio system.

Supra Design

The “double-bubble” roof design harkens back to the original Toyota sports car, the 2000 GT, and improves aerodynamics without sacrificing headroom. The prominent nose and rear wing refine features from the last-generation Supra. As with nearly all modern vehicles, distinctive LED lighting accentuates the lines of the car and lets you know it’s a Supra, at any time of day.

You can also expect to see the new 2020 Toyota Supra in some impressive colors. The Phantom Matte Gray is probably the most unique and best accentuates the bold, aggressive lines of the car. Also on offer are Renaissance Red 2.0, Nitro Yellow, Downshift Blue, Absolute Zero White, Tungsten Silver, Turbulence Gray, and Nocturnal Black.
