Between November 2018 and September 2020, visitors to several inner-canyon restroom facilities may have been filmed or photographed without their knowledge.

The FBI and National Park Service Investigative Services Branch are looking to identify victims who were filmed covertly at the Grand Canyon’s Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Trail, North Kaibab, and South Kaibab restrooms.

According to the official NPS statement, repeated incidents of voyeuristic activity by a confirmed suspect occurred from November 2018 to September 2020.

In September 2020, visitors made the first report that a maintenance worker had recorded them while using a toilet at Phantom Ranch. The worker in question was identified and subsequently fired.

The ongoing investigation indicates that recording occurred in women’s restrooms only. As such, the investigation has primarily focused on female visitors, as investigators believe that group to be the perpetrator’s target demographic.

“Although it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility that males or those identifying as females who used the female-side restrooms [were also recorded],” Joelle Baird, a Grand Canyon public affairs officer, told GearJunkie.

At this time, agents said, there’s no evidence that images taken in the restroom were shared.

The approximate number of individuals and the number of recordings remain confidential. But Baird indicated that some victims have come forward and investigators identified others.
