Shiffrin Sets Slalom Record, Everest ‘Mailrun’ FKT: Adventure News of the Week

SLALOM: Mikaela Shiffrin Takes 41st World Cup Win. Colorado-born Mikaela Shiffrin took first place at the slalom season opener in Levi, Finland, at the World Cup this weekend.

The accomplishment marks her 41st win and also makes her the most decorated slalom skier in history. Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden previously held the record at 40 World Cup wins. Read more here.

EVEREST FKT: Team Sets Record Running to and From Base Camp. Last week, three men completed the insane Everest Mailrun — running from Kathmandu, Nepal, at sea level all the way to Everest Base Camp — and first round trip feat. Ultrarunner Lizzy Hawker established the route, which athletes usually run one way.

Scott Loughney, Ryan Wagner, and Uprendra Sunawar ran the entire round-trip distance of 400 miles (640 km), with approximately 82,020 feet of elevation gain. It took them just under 10 days. Read more on the FKT here. 

HIGH FALL: Hiker and Zion Park Employee Dies on Angel’s Landing. One day after the popular Angel’s Landing trail reopened (the park closed the trail due to rockfall), 19-year-old Savannah McTague fell from the trail.

Her body was discovered and identified on Thursday. Nine people have died on the Zion National Park exposed trail since 2004, reported CNN.

CYCLO-CROSS: Van Der Poel Wins at Cyclo-Cross World Cup. Cyclo-cross World Champion Mathieu van der Poel, who races for team Corendon-Circus, won the fifth round of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup, held in Koksijde, Belgium. The win adds to his impressive 33-consecutive-win streak this season.

RUNNING: This Man Is Running Marathons in All 50 States. Tony Anderson, 57, of Michigan, is on schedule to finish the challenge of running a marathon in all 50 states to raise money to help kids.

He’ll run his 47th race in Mississippi on November 30. So far, he’s raised $500,000 for a local charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan. Read about his races here.

SKIMO: Youth Olympic Games for Ski Mountaineering Held at Eldora. This week’s qualifier for Youth Olympic Games in ski mountaineering consisted of both individual ski-mo races and a sprint time trial race.

After placing at the event, racers Jeremiah Vailee, George Beck, Samantha Paisley, and Grace Staberg were chosen to represent the U.S. at the Youth Olympic Games for the sport of ski mountaineering. The 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics will likely include the sport.
