The aim? Raise $2.5 million to help World Bicycle Relief deliver bomber bikes to folks in rural communities.

You may not realize it, but bicycles are a crucial tool in the battle against global poverty. For the second year in a row, Trek is partnering with World Bicycle Relief to help ensure that people in rural communities have access to rugged, dependable transportation.

The bike in question is called the Buffalo Bicycle, and it’s designed to stand up to the rigors of rural life in African, Southeast Asian, and South American communities.

World Bicycle Relief assembles the machines locally and uses a maintenance training program to help recipients keep their bikes in working order.

In 2021, the Trek/World Bicycle Relief partnership delivered 11,000 Buffalo Bicycles to rural areas worldwide. And this year, the duo is aiming higher.

“We are setting our goals even higher this year to get more Buffalo Bicycles into communities in order to help additional recipients conquer the challenge of distance and achieve independence,” said Bob Burns, Trek Bicycle Vice President of Advocacy.

How to Donate

If you’ve got a Trek store nearby, pop in and donate in person. If not, you can always head to Trek’s website. The campaign runs from Nov. 7 to Dec. 31, and Trek will match donations of up to half a million bucks. It’s hard to imagine a better way to spend your money this holiday season.

“Women and girls who were once hassled, exhausted, late to school and worse — can now cut their transportation time in more than half, build their confidence and stay in school,” said Johanna Vega, World Bicycle Relief’s Program Manager in Colombia. “The Buffalo Bicycle has been a game changer for them and their communities.”
