DEATHS: Several Ultrarunners Die In Extreme Weather in China 100K. Twenty-one runners are dead after encountering extreme weather and temperatures on May 22 at China’s Yellow River Stone Forest 100K, officials reported.

“The Gansu Provincial Party Committee and Government have established an incident investigation team to conduct further in-depth investigations,” reported Chinese media Weibo.com. The fatalities include 2020 UTMB Panda Trail champion Jing Liang, 31, and Paralympic champion Huang Guan Jun.

CLIMB: IFSC Bouldering World Cup Finalists Announced. The IFSC Boulder World Cup took place this past weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Twenty men and 20 women competed in the semi-final, with Natalia Grossman (USA) and Czech climb phenom Adam Ondra taking first place for women and men, respectively. TRAM: 14 Dead, Multiple Injured in Italian Tram Accident. A tram car on Italy’s Stresa-Mottarone tramway fell on Sunday, killing 14 people and injuring a 5-year-old child, LiftBlog reported.

“The 14 victims [ranged] in age from 2 to 82 and [hailed] from Italy, Israel and Iran,” it wrote. The tram is located in Piedmont region near the Italy-Switzerland border, and had recently reopened after an extended closure due to COVID-19.

BIKE: Carolyne Whelan Becomes First Female Editor-in-Chief of Adventure Cyclist. This week, bike enthusiast Carolyne Whelan replaces longtime editor Alex Strickland at the helm of Adventure Cyclist, the member magazine of Adventure Cycling Association.

Whelan has a BA and MFA in writing, and has “wrenched in bike shops around the US, hiked and biked around the Americas and Europe, and worked as a writer and editor at a number of publications, including Dirt Rag Magazine,introduced Adventure Cycling. 

Whelan joins the ranks of female editors in chief among outdoor industry publications, alongside Kristin Hostetter of Outside Business Journal, Nicole Formosa of Bike Magazine, and Sierra Shafer of SKI Magazine (and formerly Powder Magazine).
