New Ski Terrain Opens, Skiers Make X Games History: Adventure News of the Week

SKI: Bluebird Backcountry Announces Human-Powered Ski Area. Bluebird plans to open next month with 1,500 acres of backcountry ski terrain, with no chairlifts. Open on February 15, 2020, the backcountry area will have ski patrol, backcountry rentals and lessons, and warming huts.

X GAMES: Alex Ferreira, Kelly Sildaru Win Gold in Ski Superpipe. The X Games saw a lot of great talent this weekend, with Aspen local Alex Ferreira winning gold for men’s ski superpipe, a back-to-back gold and his fifth X Games medal. Aaron Blunck took home silver for the men, and Brendan McKay took home bronze.

For the women skiers, Kelly Sildaru won her ninth XG medal with gold in superpipe, becoming one of the most decorated teens in X Games history. Behind Sildaru, Rachael Karker placed second, and defending champ Cassie Sharpe placed third in the women’s ski superpipe. You can read the full results of the competitions here.

EVEREST: German Climber Attempts Everest With No Supplemental Oxygen. In 2020, 27-year-old German Jost Kobusch will attempt a solo, unsupported, no-oxygen summit of Everest. If he summits, he would be the first to do so.

RACE: Matthias Mayer Wins Downhill Word Cup Ski Race. Matthias Mayer just won the 80th Hahnenkamm ski races, becoming the first Austrian winner of the event in 6 years. The event took place in Kitzbuehel, Austria. The win for Mayer marks his eighth career World Cup.

UCI: Joris Ryf, Marion Fromberger Win Snow Bike Fest. Switzerland’s annual Snow Bike Festival consisted of a 19km race, marathon distance ride, and more, with grueling climbs and cold conditions. Joris Ryf won the overall competition for men, while Marion Fromberger placed first amongst female riders.
