Why You Never Camp In A Dry Wash

For many people, the concept of a flash flood is hard to comprehend. If you live in many parts of the world, this kind of roaring water out of nowhere just doesn’t happen.

But in the desert southwest, flash floods are very real. Kirk Roland captured this wall of water as it roared through Joshua Tree, California. While no rain is falling in the video and blue sky is even visible in the background (although he writes that heavy rain had recently fallen), the flood roars in with earth-sculpting force.

The lesson? Don’t camp in a dry wash. Just don’t do it. Water can come from storms miles away and this wouldn’t be a fun way to wake up.
