Thankfully, brands like Carhartt deliver great jackets that are no-frills, tough and effective. The Carhartt Men’s Extremes Coat/Arctic Quilt-Lined is water repellent, made of tough-as-nails 1000-denier Cordura nylon and a generous helping of polyester insulation. It’s not light or packable, but as workwear for adventuring on a budget, you could do much worse. ($135)
