Backcountry ski brand and avalanche transceiver maker Ortovox today announced the recall of its S1+ avalanche transceiver.

Ortovox S1+ Recall

In rare instances the S1+ hardware can fail, resulting in an inability to transmit a discoverable signal. This problem occurs while the transceiver appears to be functioning correctly.

The reason given by the brand is the possible failure of a component.

Ortovox reports:

“In order to eliminate any risk for our customers, we have decided on a precautionary recall so that the affected component can be replaced. The S1+ devices affected by the recall may no longer be used without the required component being replaced.”

No incidents related to the malfunction have been reported.

This precautionary recall applies exclusively to the Ortovox S1+ model of avalanche transceiver. All other Ortovox avalanche transceivers are unaffected. Its predecessor, the Ortovox S1, is likewise unaffected.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 3,000 of the German manufactured units sold between 2010 and April 2015 at specialty retailers, ski shops, and directly nationwide are affected by the recall.

The component can only be replaced at the Ortovox service point.

DUE TO THE PRODUCTION TIME OF THIS COMPONENT, RETROFITTING WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL JULY.
