Track Bike Rockets Down Oregon Hills, Into The City In 'Dreamlike' Video

In the great tradition of the American daredevil, in this video produced by Chrome Industries and Kamp Grizzly, a lone rider on a track bike named Massan Fluker goes from the city to the countryside in Oregon to bomb hills with little regard to the fact that his fixed-gear pedal cadence is out of his physiological control and that his bike has no brakes. But the soundtrack and the scenery are soothing, and so is Fluker’s demeanor. The result is a hypnotizing 3-minute dream that you gotta watch. —Stephen Regenold

This video is asinine. This kind of bike will eventually be outlawed. Anyone who knows anything about bicycle ergonomics knows that in order to stop a bicycle braking must be applied to the front wheel . It is impossible to apply any braking to the front wheel on a fixie bike. Braking can be done on the rear wheel only by using force against the cranks. Rear wheel braking is not sufficient to safely stop a bicycle. It is bad enough that this rider is a danger to everyone on the road but the video encourages other reckless and irresponsible riders to try to pull the same kind of moronic stunt.

I have to agree with John. This video is just glorifying the Chrome bag-wearing, helmet shunning, unsafe fixie-riding hipster subculture that has proliferated over the past half decade. When did brakes on bikes become “uncool”? When did bike lights at night become uncool? It’s time to seriously start questioning the aesthetics vs. safety mentality. This video isn’t doing the cycling community any favors.

This is just frustrating. It’s clear he WANTS to coast, cause he keeps taking his feet out of his pedal clips to do it. If you want to coast why don’t you just get a regular bike? I can’t understand the obsession with Fixies. To me it’s like buying a really nice sports car and asking them to leave off the breaks. Fast is no good if you can’t stop. The fastest cars have the best brakes. But Fixie riders have endless supplies of knee ligament which will always be there to bring them to a screeching, skidding, out of control stop.

Outlawed? Really?

You people need to learn to have fun. When I was a kid (back in the 70s) I used to ride a fixed gear all around the neighborhood. And yes, I used to get that bike up to speed going down the hill we lived on and then lift my feet off the pedals. Wheeeee! And all without a helmet. Gasp! It wasn’t a fashion statement or political commentary. It was a bike. It was transportation. It was a two-wheeled ticket to freedom. It was fun, and it still is.

Stop living in fear. Get a life and live it.
