A startup on the funding site Indiegogo got us at its tag line: “Pure organic Vermont maple syrup in portable packaging.” Yes, please!
We love maple syrup, and as regular consumers of GU, CLIF Shots, Honey Stinger, Hammer, and several other squeeze-to-eat gels UnTapped Maple Energy could be a welcome new energy option.
The syrup in UnTapped Maple Energy is made by Vermont’s Slopeside Syrup company, and it is being developed with professional cyclist Ted King. (King is known to fuel up for lengthy races and training rides with nips of maple syrup.)
Says the brand, “Maple syrup naturally delivers the energy kick and athletic nutrients sought by runners, cyclists, skiers, and anyone else playing in the outdoors. For too long athletic nutrition has been sweetened with cheap synthetic sugars. The simplicity of endurance sports deserves a simple ingredient — 100% pure, unadulterated, organic Vermont maple syrup.”
In addition to the sugar boost, the unprocessed syrup is rich in minerals such as manganese, iron, calcium, and zinc, the company cites.
They cost just $2.50 a pack if you pre-order. Drop $25 into the Indiegogo fund now and you’ll get a 10-pack of UnTapped Maple Energy by this fall. —Stephen Regenold
