Stomping Grounds: Photo Shoot and Shoe Test in 'Urban Outdoors'

Our home state of Minnesota is bursting into spring, and with it we used the occasion to get away from our daytime duties for a bit and into the urban outdoors of Minneapolis right from the GearJunkie office’s back door. The excuse was an afternoon gear test and a photo shoot for KEEN to highlight its new CNX line, which are lighter, more flexible versions of the brand’s hallmark sandal and shoe designs.

keen - cnx 2.jpg

Lacing up for a walk down the old rail line

Here we look at four CNX models, the Tunari and Cascade for men, and the Haven and Clearwater for women. As all-around outdoorsy shoes we found these models to work well — from hiking paths to shorelines and, with the sandals, even into the water of the still-cold Minneapolis urban lakes. Like all the shoes in the CNX line, these ones are lighter (under 10 ounces), more flexible, and have a low-profile 4mm drop to keep feet planted more naturally on the ground.

(See more photos from the shoot on this page.)

Take a look at our daily stomping grounds in the photos below (and on page 2 of this post), all within a mile or so of the GearJunkie headquarters building on the Greenway Bike Path in Minneapolis. Bonus: We have several pair of CNX shoes in-house to give away. Comment on this post below which model you like (and why) and we’ll ship CNX shoes out to a few lucky readers next month.

As for the shoe model I would have to say the Cascade; I like the look and the breathable feel the shoe seems to have which would be perfect for my summer bike rides and trips to the lake. As for the models themselves I would have to say Assistant Editor Amy Oberbroeckling is outstanding and seems to be well balanced!!! ;-0

Posted by Val Kowalewich - 05/17/2013 01:16 PM

CNX Cascade model would be my choice. Lightweight and flexi – that’s what I need. All my Keens always stand up to a stompin’ – one durable brand!

Posted by James Kennedy - 05/17/2013 01:18 PM

I’m gonna echo Toby and Val and go with the Cascade model.

Posted by Cristy Rice - 05/17/2013 01:19 PM

I would love the Haven cnx. They could tackle the White Mountains in New Hampshire all summer with me!

Posted by Nicole Green - 05/17/2013 01:20 PM

I would have to go for the CNX Haven shoe. It looks like an amazingly versatile shoe that I could wear from one activity to the next without needing to haul multiple pairs and change. The actual flexibility of the shoe is looking pretty delicious as well. Time to stop drooling….

Posted by Ed Smith - 05/17/2013 01:20 PM

Teaching my retriever puppy to swim the cascade would be awesome..

Posted by Gina Rock - 05/17/2013 01:21 PM

I love the Women’s Haven Cnx shoe. They are really cute and I like that there good for multi- terrain. I would use them hiking.

Posted by Diane - 05/17/2013 01:21 PM

I have wanted a pair of these since my Havasupai Falls hike in AZ last year. I wore hiking boots, and the heat on my feet killed me. Plus I had to bring a second pair of water shoes along. The Keen Clearwater are perfect for Arizona hikes along water trails. They are durable and breathable, the front toes are always protected. Now who do I have to bake cookies for to get me a free pair of of these :-)

Posted by DIANE SIERRA PHOTOGRAPHY - 05/17/2013 01:22 PM

I love the CNX Cascade! Need to get some ASAP!

Posted by Pamela Burns - 05/17/2013 01:23 PM

I would go w/ the Haven. As I run,w/ my dogs,everyday.All I’ve got now,are a cheap ,pair of Filas..I could use a nice,good pair!

Posted by Curtis - 05/17/2013 01:24 PM

I would love to go hiking in a new pair of Keen Kunari CNX shoes. They look so comfy while supportive and no laces to tie. Yay!

Posted by sheila bergin goss - 05/17/2013 01:26 PM

The Clearwater CNX wold be great for going canoe camping with our dogs..sometimes we have to kind of chase after them a bit, and it is often quite slippery!

Posted by lynn matzke - 05/17/2013 01:30 PM

I love Keens. They are the most comfortable footwear. They’ve turned this die hard barefooter into a Keen fiend. I would LOVE a free pair of the new Havens because I’ve spent the last 4 years having 3 baby boys (3yrs, 19 months and 4months) and momma’s feet are weary! We try to get as much quality family time outside as we can…we’ve even made it game to see how many of Wisconsin’s state parks we can hit this year. A proper pair of shoes would make my crazy journey so much sweeter, but my husband’s getting laid off soon and my footwear is low on the hierarchy of financial demands.

Posted by Scott H - 05/17/2013 01:34 PM

I’d love a pair of the Keen CNX Tunari. With the heat and humidity already moving into the Southeast US, summer is here, and I’ll be spending plenty of time outside this summer. And while trying to stay cool outdoors, the light, breathable Tunari will help keep me moving. Wearing Keen shoes is the next best thing to roaming around barefoot! Thanks for the giveaway!

Posted by Sam E. - 05/17/2013 01:34 PM

I would love a pair of the Tunari and I need a good new pair of shoes BADLY. Love Keens!

Posted by Jonathan H - 05/17/2013 01:36 PM

The CNX Tunari looks like an amazing pair of shoes for someone who love to get out there as much as I do! Love Keens. It is all I own.

Posted by Jen Lynn Rutsky - 05/17/2013 01:44 PM

Dope water shoes – I would definitely go for the Clearwater! xoxo

Posted by Jonathan Millar - 05/17/2013 01:51 PM

I can only wish for a pair of CNX tunari’s. I have a great pyrenees who loves the forest so I’m always wandering off the beaten path to explore new places.

Posted by Crag Struckman - 05/17/2013 01:54 PM

I would wish for a pair of CNX Tunari’s. Our great dane’s like to go thru all types of terain and this will allow me to do more of where they like to go

Posted by Tam Grant - 05/17/2013 01:56 PM

Based upon this article, I’d pick the Cascade. But I’d really love to try Delancy.

Posted by Craig Porzondek - 05/17/2013 01:57 PM

I my keen sense of quality tells me that any shoe made by this company would be super splendid. I already have a pair of keen mid-hikers black with 200 grams of thinsulate which I use fall and spring it would be nice to have a mid – hiker pair for summer.

Posted by Jeremy - 05/17/2013 01:59 PM

I’d love to have the Keen Clearwaters. My Keen Waimeas just failed me after 9 great years, and I have been trying to find a new Keen favorite. I think the Clearwater may just be the pair.

Posted by Zach H. - 05/17/2013 02:03 PM

I would love a pair of the Cascade’s to replace my Newport H2’s the Kalalau Trail nearly destroyed last year. I use my Newports for everything… Walking the dog, Hikes, Bike Rides… heck even mowing the yard. They are on their last leg though.

Posted by James Allen Davis - 05/17/2013 02:12 PM

The ones I like best (if the ones you are giving away are “in-house” like it says above) are the ones that are hopefully size 11 US men’s, & I think the reason why would be obvious, ‘cause they wouldn’t be too small or too big. If we have a choice though of the 2 models listed, size, & color, & they’ll be sent by Keen or elsewhere, then I guess I’d go with the Cascade CNX in the black/gargoyle colorway preferably. Why? Well, I’ve had a pair of Keens since the 2nd year they were in business but they finally just “died” earlier this year. They were from the very 1st year’s lineup & I got them on sale when I did, absolutely great all-around comfort shoes that were perfect for rainy days & that’s why I got ‘em, now I need another pair of rain shoes…, & Keens are perfect for that & just about everything else to! : D

Posted by Eric Chatham - 05/17/2013 02:14 PM

I just bought an unused inflatable kayak from my brother, so the Clearwater model, that’s the aquatic model I think? I have an older model of the Keen cycling sandals that I enjoy.

Posted by John Edmondson - 05/17/2013 02:14 PM

The CNX Cascade is perfectly versatile for all of my outdoor/indoor activities. Hiking, biking, canoeing, speed hiking, work, canyoneering, playing with the kid. Transitioning from work to play,to relaxing without ever having to change my shoe. Sounds like perfection to me. Especially when down time comes so rarely…you have to be effeciant with the time! :)

Posted by Ryan D. - 05/17/2013 02:17 PM

The CNX Cascade’s would come in handy for my river crossings when I’m on the trail this summer in the Ozarks.

Posted by Kyle - 05/17/2013 02:24 PM

3 years ago I had a bad accident/mishap that left me with a number of back and kidney injuries. I went from hiking all of the time to a wheel chair at 32 years old. It took me a while to ditch the chair for a walker. Then I was able to ditch the walker for a cane. Recently I hiked Mt. Davis and used my cane for firewood at camp. My goal is to go back and hike Pike’s Peak at the end of the summer. A pair of Keen Tunari CNX would be a nice addition to my gear bag for hiking season!

Posted by Kristen - 05/17/2013 02:32 PM

I would love a pair of Haven’s to get me back on my feet after being on doctor ordered bed rest for about 2 months in preparation for the birth of my twins. Once these babies are out I am hoping to get the three of us out as much as possible!!!

Posted by Brian - 05/17/2013 02:54 PM

Tunari, seem versitile enough for a debut pair of keens.

Posted by Eric - 05/17/2013 02:56 PM

I think the lower drop will be nice for proper body alignment. I would love to have a pair as my H2’s are WORN OUT, after 3 years of constant wear that is.

Posted by Jon - 05/17/2013 03:08 PM

I blow out hiking sandals every summer in my job as day camp director for a YMCA. 60+ kids keep me on my feet the entire day! The CNX Cascade model looks as though it might be able to withstand the demands of my job AND offer me some added comfort as well!

Posted by Heather E. - 05/17/2013 03:13 PM

I’d have to say the Cascade model. They look lighter than the traditional Keen, and would be the perfect camping and canoeing footwear for upcoming summer adventures.

Posted by Heather E. - 05/17/2013 03:15 PM

Sorry… make that the Clearwater – and the Cascade for my husband.

Posted by Jessica Black - 05/17/2013 03:20 PM

I’d like the ladies Clearwater to protect my feet from oyster beds and other hazards while paddle boarding.

Posted by Robin Young - 05/17/2013 03:21 PM

Loving the Keen Clearwater for women. I need a good outdoorsy sandal to let my feet breathe in the summer air and play in the water!

Posted by Sarah Austin - 05/17/2013 03:36 PM

I’d love to try the cascade, in the pretty blue color. We are on or by water most of the summer. Having a water shoe would be great. And I love that Keens are made wider to fit my big feet.

Posted by Kevin - 05/17/2013 04:53 PM

I bought techamphibains two years ago instead of Keens. Ever since then I wish I went with Keens. My friends Keens dry faster, wear better, and have yet to fall a part. If I had my druthers I’d get a pair of the cnv cascades, or a similar model.

Posted by Eric - 05/17/2013 05:21 PM

The Cascase CNX looks like the perfect sandal for my adventure into the BWCA next month!

Posted by Andy O. - 05/17/2013 05:23 PM

CNX Cascade model would be the model for me. I want these shoes because I have to wear closed toe shoes on Boy Scout trips. It’s a safety requirement for outdoor activities. My boots work fine, but I sure would like something that would allow my feet to breathe more. Oh, and something I can get wet without worrying about it. Yours in Cheerful Service.

Posted by Paul Downing - 05/17/2013 07:04 PM

Best shoes EVER! The Cascade would be my choice. A lighter shoe without losing the toughness. I especially love roominess and trademark protection for my toes. Great for future kayak trips!

Posted by Matt - 05/17/2013 07:14 PM

Love the Cascade…light weight and minimal, while keeping rocks and debris out of my shoes.
Looks perfect for summer adventures.

Cascade model so I can go hiking on land and through water in the summer time.

Posted by John Turner - 05/18/2013 06:18 AM

The Clearwater CNX would be my choice, one pair of shoes for most outdoor activities and watersports. They look good enough for everyday wear too!

Posted by Colter - 05/19/2013 12:45 AM

I would love to have the CNX Cascades because they look cool.

Posted by Kerri Favor - 05/19/2013 09:58 AM

CNX Havens rock all terrains!! I love the design and all the bright colors. Looks like a haven for your soles.

Posted by Carl - 05/19/2013 04:15 PM

Personally i love the look of the cascade. I found them in a shop in the Lake district earlier this year and fell in love. I don’t normally get on with sandals but they fitted like normal shoes but with far better breathability (obviously), which’d go well with my shorts all year round attitude.

Posted by Jan Warner - 05/19/2013 09:09 PM

Clearwater, I love the green ones! I have had planter fasciitis for over a year now and only keen flip flops feel good on my feet and I am thinking the Clearwater shoes will feel just as wonderful!

Posted by Kathy - 05/20/2013 10:55 AM

I like the CNX Haven shoes. I could go anywhere in those.

Posted by KateT - 05/20/2013 11:52 AM

The Clearwater CNX for me. Amphibious for your feet, and cool airy protection for action packed outdoor activities.

Posted by teresa harvey - 05/20/2013 12:59 PM

I need a pair of CNX Haven shoes because they would be awesome for trails that I walk and camping/hiking too!

Posted by Clinton Munkres - 05/20/2013 01:00 PM

I would go for the Bleecker Slip-On CNX. I’m old and nothing is a convenient as a pair of slip ons. Also handy in airport lines.

Posted by frank - 05/20/2013 01:02 PM

the Casacadeas would be perfect. I just found out we are sailing in the BVI this winter and those would be the perfect shoe for shore excursions as well as all around water shoes. I bought my girlfriend a pair of Keen hiking boots for our trip to Montana this summer and she loves them.

Posted by Craig Porzondek - 05/20/2013 01:03 PM

I guess the turnari for men would be my choice. First, my feet sweat and stink easily and I don’t care to feel rocks in my shoes either. I like total coverage and I Prefer to always geek it out with Wigwam Merino Silk socks which keep you dry and comfortable even during some of the toughest hikes… Together they would be a deadly combination for quick light hikes on a moment’s notice. My friend’s and I have been known to drop everything a midnight to hit the trails for shits and shin splints… I’m keen on these shoes so send me a pair.

Posted by Nino - 05/20/2013 01:04 PM

to be honest, i NEED ANY of those great keen shoes,`cos i worn-out all my hiking gear, and economy is down overseas too!:)

Posted by Nicole Biddle - 05/20/2013 01:04 PM

Cascade CNX for me! I spend most of the summer hiking in the Sierra foothills and wading in the American River to cool down. I would never take these off!

Posted by Cora Kirkpatrick - 05/20/2013 01:05 PM

I would love to win a pair of Tunari for my hubby! He only wears Converse Chuck Taylors. He has MS and he’s been having a lot of back/leg and ankle pain. I keep telling him that he really should try wearing a shoe that offers more support on his feet.

Posted by Dawn Seeman - 05/20/2013 01:06 PM

The CNX Cascade model is EXACTLY what my Husband needs! He has taken on so much adventure hiking, he needs these sandals to keep his feet comfortable. What a great Father’s Day gift these would be.

Posted by Teresa Jones - 05/20/2013 01:06 PM

I would love to have the Keen Alamosa WP for my son to wear. He loves water, jumping in puddles and just being a boy.And I love the cordlocks!

Posted by Isaac - 05/20/2013 01:06 PM

I’ve been thinking the CNX Cascades would be perfect for my SUP and kayak fishing trips.

Posted by jeannine s - 05/20/2013 01:09 PM

I like the Clearwaters. They would be perfect for when my feet swell in the heat

Posted by Victoria - 05/20/2013 01:13 PM

My choice? The CNX Tunari. So cool.

Posted by Mike - 05/20/2013 01:15 PM

The CNX Tunari would be perfect for my summers filled with chasing middle schoolers around. I work in student ministry and my summer is filled with service projects, camping trip and plenty of Capture the Flag. These shoes would provide the support and protection my feet need in the harshest environment of them all: middle school.

Posted by CherylR - 05/20/2013 01:16 PM

The Haven is my favorite. Perfect for my needs and looks very comfortable.

Posted by Eugenie - 05/20/2013 01:30 PM

The Clearwater would be great for keeping my feet cool, comfortable and protected whether I’m walking on trails or playing around water.

Posted by chris - 05/20/2013 01:34 PM

CNX Cascade model so my wife won’t stop boasting how awesome her Keen’s are and how I am not as cool as she is, so we can go on a hike every day this summer.

Posted by Nick wildman - 05/20/2013 01:55 PM

Definitely the tunari! I need that coverage. Gotta get a pair for summer trail runs by the beach!

Posted by Gary D. - 05/20/2013 01:59 PM

I like and need a pair of Bleecker Lace CNX. They are perfect for people like me with slightly wider feet, and make for great shoes when you have to do a lot of walking around all day while still looking professional. I also like the Nopo Lace for roughly the same reason; however, these are definitely sportier and more for outdoors walking. As for hiking, wow, those Erickson PCT’s, Ketchums, and Oregon PCT’s are not only awesome hiking shoes, but great approach shoes for the serious rock climber.

Posted by Jessica - 05/20/2013 02:38 PM

Ladies Clearwater for me please! Living by the beach in FL comfy sandals that can get wet are a must for all the paddling, boating, shell seeking, etc. that I do.

Posted by Charlie D. - 05/20/2013 02:41 PM

I could use a pair of cascades to replace my thrift store Keens. They still hold up but they smell like r. kelly’s sheets if you know what I mean.

Posted by Brenda - 05/20/2013 02:43 PM

The Cascade will protect my peeps from all those pointy things I happen across int eh desert and help my feet not sweat.

Posted by Jennifer Chamberlain - 05/20/2013 02:47 PM

The Tunari CNX is for me. A lightweight, low profile, multi-sport outdoor shoe. Who’s ready to hit the trails? :)

Posted by Crystal Metzler - 05/20/2013 02:51 PM

The Clearwater ones would be perfect for our awesome ever changing Oregon terrain! :)

Posted by Oliver Mason - 05/20/2013 02:52 PM

Mens Clearwater CNX for me. Walking, running, playing. Versatility is the order of the day. Aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic. Perfect.

Posted by Rick P - 05/20/2013 02:52 PM

Clearwater cnx looks cool, I have pair of newport h2’s that I would love to get another pair, best shoes ever!

Posted by Robin Dale - 05/20/2013 04:13 PM

I would LOVE a pair of the Cascade CNX for playing around in the Columbia Gorge!

Posted by Josh Dishman - 05/20/2013 04:19 PM

I would love to have a pair of Tunari’s because I play disc golf and I’m walking around in some shoes with holes in them in a swamp and from what I hear and see Keen are the best shoes for this situation.

Posted by Chauna Black - 05/20/2013 04:25 PM

I’d love a chance to try out the CNX Clearwater. To be honest, I’ve never owned a pair of Keens, but the Clearwater looks (and sounds, from your description) a lot like my beloved “hiking sandals”, that I had to put to rest after four years of use because they had finally fallen apart so badly that even a shoe repair shop couldn’t put them back together again. :( I took those things through every terrain (including water), just as your pics suggest these Keens will handle, and I have searched and searched for another with the feel, flexibility, and durability of my original sandals (which are no longer made), but have yet to find anything that can truly replace them. That good toe protection, seeming flexibility to move with your foot (or is it better stated ‘allow your foot to move’??), and the ability to handle both land and water that the Clearwater offers gives me renewed hope that there just might be another perfect “hiking sandal” out there.

Posted by Brent - 05/20/2013 04:29 PM

I think the Tunari look amazing – I would wear them all the time! I hike and bike daily, so they would definitely be put to good use! Thanks.

Posted by Erin Williams - 05/20/2013 04:33 PM

I would love a pair of Cascades! You never know when good old fashion play is going to get you wet! I love my Keens to take me anywhere I want to go. I’m lucky enough to be able to wear them to work even!

Posted by Jenifer Spang - 05/20/2013 05:47 PM

Loving the CNX Cascade model!! Would be great for kayaking and just an all around water shoe :)

Posted by KatheeG - 05/20/2013 07:38 PM

The CNX Tunari model the blonde is wearing would look great on this blonde, and be perfect for day hikes and walks that I go on every day that isn’t pouring rain here.

Posted by paula skeans - 05/20/2013 08:52 PM

CNX Cascade I would have to pick. I have a 5 yr old and she gets all the new keens in our house now that she has a love for them also :) These would be great for hikes and walking the trails we walk :) Thanks for the chance

Posted by MelindaK - 05/20/2013 11:07 PM

CNX Haven, they look super comfortable and wonderful to stroll around in.

Posted by SimonH - 05/21/2013 02:34 AM

I like the Bleecker Lace CNX, because I love well-made leather shoes/boots and I also like their look.

Posted by Alex Flamm - 05/21/2013 07:33 AM

Being that I wear squatch sizes, Keen are one of the only outdoor shoe companies that cater to people with large feet. I wear a 15 so I would have to say the CNX Cascade because it’s spring/summer and the rivers calling my name. I’d be KEEN on a pair of those.

Posted by Dan Human - 05/21/2013 08:17 AM

I’m volunteering this summer to do SAR patrols in Zoar Valley WMA so I’ll be spending my weekends wading through creeks and avoiding the occasional rockslide. The Keen Clearwater CNX would be perfect for the task, especially given its traction enhancing razor siping. Plus with excellent support and a protective toe bumper, I’ll stay comfy and protected.

Posted by Jay - 05/21/2013 08:52 AM

The Clearwater CNX would be excellent multi-weather and multi-activity shoes for me. Beachcombing, canoeing, rafting, river gorging, canyoning, general hiking and approach shoes, camping, going to the pub, shopping in the high street, around the house and in the garden…….. they’d definately get a lot of use!

Posted by Howell - 05/21/2013 01:32 PM

I like the CASCADE CNX. It’ll fit right in with my rafting and hiking this summer.

Posted by AlisonB - 05/22/2013 06:02 AM

The Haven CNX look protective and robust enough for most activities, I’d love a pair.

Posted by Alastair - 05/23/2013 08:21 AM

I would love the CNX’s for my more aquatic pursuits! A nice shoe for the beach, trail, river tracing, rafting, and dragonboat practice! No more splinters from our dying practice boat.

Posted by Tim Rice - 05/23/2013 11:08 AM

I would like the Tunari because I wouldn’t need to skake the gravel out like sandals. Plus I could wear them in the winter time without packing snow in them. Sandals are awesome, but a Keen shoe that wears like a sandal but isn’t….. Best shoe ever.

Posted by Joe Miller - 05/24/2013 11:24 AM

CNX Cascade model:
Comfort of a sandal, but the aggression of a hiking shoe.
Breathable enough to let you hike to suffocating heights.
The sole understands the mountains, the foot-bed that understands you.
The openness of a flip flop, but with the confidence to walk through a stone field at night.
Tread that understands underwater surfaces, and an upper that repels moisture.
What is not to like?

Posted by Dan S. - 05/24/2013 11:47 AM

The Tunari would go well with my feet. I’m an urban ninja and need something that can handle the dry and wet conditions that come with tackling the jungle which is urban. The lightness of the CNX would allow me to go undetected through the back alleys on my longboard.

Posted by Lane Martin - 05/28/2013 10:24 AM

I believe the Cascades would be the best fit. Adjustable laces for a custom fit and I could go from trail to lake without a worry.

Posted by John S - 05/28/2013 03:55 PM

The CNX Cascade model is something I have been oogling over for a while… Love the look, fit and weight!!

Posted by Marianna - 06/05/2013 09:31 AM

LOVE Keens but cant get them here in SA. Have to import them, and would be willing to do that :) I love the cnx sandal in the turg color (my fav color). I travel/walk everywhere & this would be the PERFECT shoe, travel, walk, hike at altitude we are very active. Retired so have time for a lot of things. These would be perfect for my coaching sessions w/my coach. Light weight so they don’t weigh me down.

Posted by Paige Kurpjuweit - 07/07/2013 08:07 PM

I am going to say the Haven cnx in gargoyle and super lemon. Sleek. Sexy and hot as wasabi.
