This spring The North Face heads off the mountain and into the gym. The company’s new Mountain Athletics project focuses on sport-specific training for runners, climbers, and skiers.

The brand partnered with the Mountain Athlete gym in Jackson, Wyo., on the project to develop training plans that focus on weight lifting, sprints, lunges, and other traditional exercises.

Several The North Face athletes are involved, including Kit DesLauriers, Dean Karnazes, Cedar Wright, Mike Wolfe, and other world class climbers, skiers, and ultra-runners.

Instructional videos and an app are in development. You can download a six-week training guide designed for your sport such as the men’s running program here.

In addition, the company has a line of gear, from shoes to workout shorts, to go with the indoor exercise push.

Finally, the company will host eight regional events based on the Mountain Athletics program beginning this month. See the full schedule and more details on the program at the Mountain Athletics page.

We’re psyched to see The North Face push the training side of its core sports and look forward to trying out some of the Mountain Athletics programs and gear in the gym this spring. —Stephen Regenold
