Garrison Brothers Balmorhea: $70
Jim Murray’s “Whiskey Bible 2019” named Garrison Brothers Balmorhea Double Barrel Bourbon “The American Micro Whiskey of the Year” for 2019. And for good reason. The color is unmatched and the taste extraordinary. Like the red caramel hue of your roaring fire, this candy-like sipper is the toasted marshmallow for your campfire treat. And as if that taste weren’t reason enough to covet a bottle, a portion of the proceeds goes to restoring Balmorhea State Park, a beloved West Texas swimming hole.
Check it outEH Taylor Small Batch: $40
This $40 bottle has a lot of great characteristics that you would normally find in older, more expensive whiskeys. With hints of tobacco, vanilla, and honey, it’s like sucking on a sweet and spicy hard candy while puffing a fine cigar inside a dusty corn silo. Sounds crazy, but it tastes delicious. The fake tax strip, cardboard/metal tube case, and classic label lettering will have your friends thinking you brought some of grandpa’s old stash to the campsite.
Check it outMichter’s 10 Year Single Barrel: $120
This one is a terrific bourbon that has all the great characteristics associated with longer aging time. It will keep you warm and cozy. Close your eyes and think of a smokey leather jacket, with a festive chocolate-covered, nutmeg-dusted fruit cake. Oh yeah, it’s that good. It’s perfect for campfire celebrations and memorable moments with friends. Plus, Michter’s is one of the few distilleries with a female master distiller. In 2016, Pam Heilmann became the first woman since Prohibition to serve as a master distiller at a Kentucky Distiller’s Association distillery. We’ll drink to that.
Check it outHigh West Campfire: $65
This unique hybrid could easily win over your scotch friends to the bourbon team or your bourbon friends to the scotch team. When imagining the flavor, think of BBQ ribs marinated in chai tea, cooked over the smokey remnants of last night’s campfire. High West does some of the most exciting and interesting things in the bourbon world today, and this bottle is no different. Plus, with a name like Campfire and a reasonable price tag, you can’t go wrong here.
Check it outOld Forester 1920: $55
Old Forester is one of the best buys in the crazy bourbon market these days. This 115-proof expression is the third release in our Old Forester Whiskey Row series and celebrates the brand’s continued distillation during Prohibition. Best of all, it’s readily available and drinks far above its pay grade. If you like a good dark beer, this is the one for you.
