Insulated mug maker Stanley PMI has issued a voluntary recall of 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the U.S. According to the brand, when the lid threads are exposed to heat and torque, they can shrink, causing detachment issues and posing a burn hazard to users.

The brand received 91 reports of the issue from around the world, 16 of which were in the U.S. In total, the lid detachment problem resulted in 38 burn injuries globally — 11 of which required medical attention.

Mugs specified in the recall include all of Stanley’s double-walled Switchback and Trigger Action mugs sold on Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and other U.S. retailers from June 2016 through December 2024. The mugs in question come in 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes and in black, green, and white colors.

For the Switchback, any mugs with the product ID numbers 20-01437, 20-01436, and 20-02211 are included in the recall. For the Trigger Action, any mugs with the product ID numbers 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825, 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957, 20-02034, and 20-02746 are included in the recall.

You can find the product ID number on the bottom of your Stanley mug.

If you own a Stanley Switchback or Trigger Action mug included in this recall, Stanley asks that you immediately stop using it and register on the brand’s recall webpage for a free replacement lid. Simply select the type of mug you have and enter the product number, and Stanley will send you a new lid.
