On Wednesday, Peloton voluntarily recalled 2.2 million Bikes (Model PL01) due to reports of seat post breakage.

“The bike’s seat post assembly can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards to the user,” documents posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated.

The hazard has occurred in the field, according to 35 reports of failures in which the seat post broke and detached from bikes during use. Those incidents resulted in 13 injuries, including a fractured wrist, lacerations, and bruises “due to falling from the bike.”

Peloton and Dick’s Sporting Goods locations throughout the U.S. sold the affected bikes, as did Onepeloton, Amazon, and the Dick’s Sporting Goods website. Bikes retailed “for about $1,400” from January 2018 through May 2023, according to the CPSC.

Peloton Recall: What to Do

If you have a Peloton Bike, you should stop using it immediately. The remedy is a repair. The company will offer a free replacement seat post to “all U.S. Peloton original Bike owners,” which can be installed at home — no need for a service call, according to the brand.

Peloton said it encourages all members to register for the replacement, which it said have been approved for all Bikes. The seat post is the only part of the Bike that requires repair, according to Peloton said.

All that’s required to get a replacement post is to go to the recall replacement portal and enter your name, phone number, and shipping address. Peloton made installation instructions available via this PDF. (Owners can find their model number by locating it on the inside of the front fork, near the flywheel.)

“Everyone at Peloton cares deeply about your health and wellness, including your safety,” the company’s recall page states. “We appreciate your attention to these important recall announcements and are so thankful to have you as a Member of our community.”

Previous recalls from Peloton included all of its treadmills 2 years ago following the death of a child.
