“If you saw a fat bike back in the day, it was like seeing a friggin’ unicorn.” So begins this brief history of the fat bike, an original GearJunkie production.

Amazingly, mass-produced fat bikes have graced the planet for a full decade (and longer with custom builds). They are no more “unicorns” of the cycling world, yet even today garner curious looks from the uninitiated.

GearJunkie visited Quality Bicycle Products in Bloomington, Minn., makers of the storied Surly Pugsley fat bike (and later Salsa Cycles models), to dig into the history of the genre, from the days of homemade rims to the modern custom models gracing showroom floors today.

“10 Years Of Fat Bikes” was shot and edited by Erik Nelson and co-produced with GearJunkie contributing editor Tom Puzak. Click play, and hop on for the fat ride.
