Protected bike lanes are springing up across the United States to help bikes and cars happily coexist. But protected lanes lose their buffer separation at intersections, reducing the comfort and safety for bikers and increasing the chance for conflict between bikes and cars.
This proposal for the George Mason University 2014 Cameron Rian Hays Outside the Box Competition by urban planner Nick Falbo borrows a trick from the Dutch with a unique intersection design that appears to improve conditions for all users.
