GearJunkie readers might remember Bike Fixtation from its unique gear-filled vending machines, which we covered in 2012. The Minneapolis company has grown and expanded its product line, including the release of the Public Toolbox this fall.
Made to enable ad hoc repairs in public spaces, the unit has eight bicycle-specific tools all securely attached by a stainless steel cable. It’s a slick wall-mounted design and made in the USA with solid, abuse-ready parts.
I tried it out last month at the brand’s headquarters. The tools — including wrenches, screwdrivers, and tire levers — can help you accomplish any basic bike repair.
They are mounted on long (54 inch) cables to let you reach every part of a bike. The screwdrivers have swivels so you can rotate and use the tool without twisting the cable.
We’ve seen Bike Fixtation units and similar tool stations and bike pumps popping up in public spaces. It’s a great trend that makes bike commuting and pleasure riding easier and more accessible for everyone.
The Public Toolbox is intended for businesses, schools, and other institutions (not general consumers). Custom branding or logos can be added to the faceplate of the mounting unit. It costs $445 and comes ready to mount outdoors on a wall to offer DIY repair options for anyone rolling by.
