The first-of-its-kind mountain bike tire uses NFC chip technology to communicate with the rider’s phone.
Today, renowned bike tube manufacturer, Tubolito, announced “the world’s first smart inner tube.” With a near-weightless near-field communication (NFC) chip, the MTB P-SENS can digitally read the pressure within the tube and communicate that data to an app on the user’s phone.
The tube has the same construction and thickness as the brand’s Tubo-MTB at a comparable weight (the chip adds about 10 g to the Tubo-MTB). According to Tubolito, to read the pressure, a rider must place their phone within 3 cm of the chip.
While this means you can’t receive on-the-fly alerts of your tire’s pressure, the brand says you can simply tap your phone to the tire (while stopped) with the valve in the 12 o’clock position. Here’s a video of the P-SENS in action:
Of course, the world’s smartest tube comes at a one-of-a-kind price as well. The MTB P-SENS comes in 27.5- and 29-inch sizes, and both run $50 a pop.
