Four dudes, some stoke, and a political message to trump all others.
Dave Kulberg, Ben Ozzello, James Moon, and Brian Sewell were sitting around the breakfast table last Saturday on another unseasonably warm November morning in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
“We were just trying to think of something that would bring smiles to people’s faces,” recounted Kulberg, 27, on a phone call with us. “It just seemed like everyone needed some comic relief from the whole thing.”
Kulberg, of course, was referring to the recent election cycle, widely considered one of the most divisive and vitriolic in recent history.
So, with some free time and a mission to bring a little levity into everyone’s day, Kulberg and crew hatched a plan and went to Walmart.
“We got some white sign board and markers and then sat in the parking lot coming up with ideas,” said Kulberg. “We decided we wanted to stand up for what we really love, snowboarding.”
‘Powder To The People’
The bandit do-gooders took to Lincoln Ave. and 5th St., just outside the Routt County Department of Motor Vehicles. According to Kulberg, it’s been a popular spot for less important protests, like the political kind.
The foursome waved their signs to rally the mountain town of 12,000 year-round residents — and two ski resorts — with messages like “Make Colorado Snow Again,” “Not My Season,” and “Anything But Summer.”
Slowly but surely, passersby went from uncertain gawking to enthusiastic honking and shouts of support for the knock-off slogans.
“At first, we could tell people really didn’t know what to think,” Kulberg said. “But then we saw people’s eyes light up when they actually read the signs.”
He continued, “It felt great, we just hope it works.”
Looks like a little relief to the balmy weather is on the way; Steamboat Springs is forecast to receive 3-5 inches of snow by Thursday evening.
