All-Terrain Euro Wagon Dreams Do Come True

Mercedes is finally offering up a full-featured, go-anywhere luxury wagon in the U.S. In the fall, we’ll finally get the updated 2021 E-Class All-Terrain wagon.

While the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagon has been on offer in Europe for years now, we’ve never gotten it on this side of the Atlantic. We have enjoyed the E-Class wagon, but not the AWD, air-suspension-equipped, feature-packed All-Terrain version.

Mercedes E-Class Update

The entire Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup is getting a facelift for 2021. The only really big news in this update is the All-Terrain wagon being on offer in the U.S. for the first time. It will replace the outgoing regular E-Class wagon for now.

We suspect we haven’t seen the last of the go-fast Merc wagon, the AMG E63. While Mercedes hasn’t announced anything officially yet, we expect that range-topping superwagon to not disappear from our roads.

Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse (S 213), 2020

Besides some exterior cosmetics and the new All-Terrain wagon, the E-Class also gets some big interior updates. The big news is the MBUX infotainment system and dual 12.3-inch screens, which are all now standard. There are no physical gauges in sight anymore. New colors, materials, and comfort features are also on offer in the interior.

All-Terrain Wagon

The All-Terrain will offer up a super-luxury ride that will be quite capable of hauling your friends and your gear down forest service roads and icy mountain roads.

All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard, as are Offroad and Offroad Plus driving modes and hill-descent control. We don’t know much about what these modes do just yet, but computer wizardry for better traction is nothing new.

We also get Air Body Control with the All-Terrain. It’s essentially the same fancy air suspension found on some Mercedes SUVs. This system provides more ground clearance, better fuel efficiency on the highway, and a super-comfortable ride.

With the All-Terrain, we also get a 3L inline-six turbo engine, with a mild-hybrid EQ Boost system. This hybrid engine system and nine-speed automatic transmission should be fuel efficient and offer up some real performance. So far, we know it will have 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque on tap.

We don’t get a spare tire with the All-Terrain, but we do get all-season run-flat tires standard. They come on a unique 19-inch wheel or optional 20s. It’s yet to be determined how small a wheel and large a tire you can fit over the big brakes and inside the fenders, but we’re hopeful a smaller wheel will be an option.

On the outside, the All-Terrain gets a new grille, front bumper, body-cladding, and faux skid plates front are rear. These features help it look more rugged and align more with the rest of the Mercedes SUV lineup. This wagon also gets double power bulges in the hood, a characteristic carried over from previous AMG models.

At What Cost?

The one thing we really don’t know yet about the 2021Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagon is the price. We’ll know more closer to its fall 2020 debut at dealerships, but our best guess is that it will be in the neighborhood of $70,000. That’s a lot of coin, but it’s also a lot of car.
