A peek at emerging products from the sometimes cutting-edge, sometimes quirky world of gear design.
Kids Moto
Neither for the faint of heart, nor long of stride, Auto Fabrica’s Type 0.1 motorbike has adventurous kids in mind. While it’s not for sale, you can head to AF’s headquarters some 30 miles east of London and take this 50-cc Franco Morini rebuild with 10-inch wheels for a spin.
Trident Multi-Tool
Bring this multi-tool almost anywhere—that’s the claim behind the B.A.T. Trident. Twelve functions — including knife and saw edges, flat and Phillips head screwdrivers, ruler, and more — pack into the unique shape, modeled after side-release buckles. Successfully funded on Kickstarter, the Trident is a larger cousin to the original, quarter-sized B.A.T. (Bring Anywhere Tool).
Inflatable Camera Bag
Waterproof, inflatable, and humidity-monitoring, the Inrigo Camera Bag employs multiple functions to protect expensive gear. Live on Kickstarter, the 35-liter Inrigo has internal organization pockets, external drone and tent mounts, and a built-in monitor to alert you (via phone) if humidity rises inside the bag or if you’re too far from the bag. Plus, an inflation valve allows you to add extra cushion and buoyancy.
Surly Beer and Bike Collab
It finally happened: Minnesota’s two Surlys — bikes and beer — teamed up for a special release. The Masher Edition offers a single-speed grocery — er, growler — getter take on the old Wednesday trail build. The extremely limited-edition bikes will be raffled and auctioned off exclusively at Surly Brewing’s Masher benefit to raise money for Full Cycle, a Minneapolis nonprofit that provides bike internships to homeless youth.
Party Barge Cooler
Open-faced cooler? Revo’s Party Barge aims to tear the roof off of cooler design — literally. With multiple compartments for drinks, snacks, dips, and anything else to keep chilled at a hot gathering, the Party Barge is built for entertaining. Plus, each compartment is individually insulated, so you can keep hot food next to cold drinks on ice.
Sleek Folder
Sharp, smooth, and styled to stand out, the MS3 Style Manhattan Pocket Knife is a blend of art and utility. The 2.6-inch M390 blade folds into a lock-side titanium body. Made by Zieba New York in collaboration with Shinola, the Manhattan weighs 2.21 ounces and retails for $295.
Skin-On-Frame Foldable Boat
Take this skin-on-frame inflatable boat deeper into the wilds. K-Pak aims to add the portability of an inflatable to the strength and feel of a skin-on-frame build with this 9-foot 2-inch one-person paddler. According to the brand, the tri-fold design sets up in 4–5 minutes, with aluminum poles locking into place within the thermal polyurethane skin. Available now for $685, the K-Pak folds into its own backpack and weighs 21 pounds.
Women's Onesie
Take to the slopes with a brand new look. Oneskee launches all-new designs for its line of lades’ ski and snowboard suits. Padded, insulated, breathable, and waterproof, the Oneskee suits come with internal hood headphone port, cuff and ankle gaiters, and mesh-lined vents along legs and underarms. Available for $540.
Camp Cleaver
As useful as it is terrifying, White River Knife‘s 2018 Clever Camp Cleaver tackles camp chores and skinning tasks. Measuring 10.25 inches total and weighing 9.2 ounces, the Camp Cleaver sports a curved, 5.5-inch CPM S35VN blade designed to reduce motion in slicing tasks. Launching this year, White River confirmed the Camp Cleaver will be a limited release.
RipRow Cycle Trainer
“Get faster while you get stronger,” all without moving an inch. The RipRow offers an indoor training option to perfect your mountain biking balance and form. A rocker design makes the RipRow unstable, which helps users strengthen their core. Meanwhile, dampers on front and rear allow riders to simulate climbs, turns, and descents. Available now for $1,199.
'Cheersable' Tumbler
Pack an entire bottle of wine and bring enough cups to toast — that’s the idea behind High Camp’s Firelight Flask. The 750mL, insulated, stainless steel tumbler has detachable cups on top and bottom, so no need to pack extra. In production now, the Firelight Flask will retail for $125.
Racing Axe
Don’t just chop, chop really fast. Sweden’s largest and oldest axe manufacturer, Hults Bruk, forged 5-Star Racing Axe in response to growing interest in lumberjack sports. The 5-Star sports a 4.5-pound steel axehead atop a 32-inch American hickory handle. Available now for $189.
Boating Trucker
Don’t let the wind get you down, bring the Boat Brim ballcap-style hat aboard. The $30 Boat Brim hats are windproof up to 60 miles per hour, and withstand the sun and spray of sailing.
