Airy down and uber-thin fabric make the Ghost Whisperer among the most popular ‘puffy’ jackets. Now, Mountain Hardwear builds that same design into a sleeping bag line for 2018.
Design can cross boundaries at a company like Mountain Hardwear, a Bay Area gear behemoth with wide-open workspaces that encourage collaboration.
For a spring 2018 debut, the genre-bending comes to sleeping bags, where Mountain Hardwear lends jacket design to an uber-light mummy line.
Similar materials are employed. And the warmth-to-weight ratio that made Ghost Whisperer jackets a favorite are included in the 20- and 40-degree F sleeping bags.
Ghost Whisperer Sleeping Bags
We are longtime fans of the Ghost Whisperer jacket (see our first review from 2013) and look forward to testing the sleeping bags.
GearJunkie was the first media to see the bag on a recent visit to the company’s Bay Area headquarters. It struck immediately as light, cozy, and packable.
They are premium all around, including 900-fill (RDS-certified) goose down and a wispy 10d nylon ripstop fabric.
The light fabric and insulation let the bags pack down extra small (about 5×11 inches for the 40-degree model).
Weight? Like the jacket, the bags are light — the 40-degree model is about 1 lb. 1 oz.; the 20-degree, 1 lb. 13 oz.
No-Snag Zipper, Dialed Hood
Zipper teeth can catch annoyingly on thin material. Mountain Hardwear knows this, and its design adds an interesting no-snag zipper to the bags. I tested it, zipping up fast and the large zip housing worked great.
The hood is nice. As with its namesake jacket, the hood area is ergonomic and ensconces the head.
Both Ghost Whisperer sleeping bags will come in regular and long sizes. They will cost a premium at $400-$430 (40-degree) or $580-$610 (20-degree).
Look to these bags next year if you’re in the market for a premium cocoon. In the hand, they are impressive — feathery and warm to the touch when the down wraps your hand.
