It started as a gag, but Kathmandu’s Adapt all-weather wedding dress went from April Fool’s prank to hot auction item overnight.

Deep pockets, a hideaway rain cloak, Gore-Tex and merino, and a transformable length for hitting the dance floor all come together in what is surely one of the most unique wedding dresses ever created.

Outdoor gear brand Kathmandu initially launched Adapt — the “world’s first all-weather wedding dress” — as an April Fool’s joke. And we covered it as such. But today, Kathmandu unveiled the one-off dress on auction site Trade Me and announced all proceeds would benefit earthquake relief and outreach for communities in the Himalaya region of Nepal.

In an effort to satisfy the “best prepared bride,” designer Tanya Carlson made a dress that’s waterproof, warm, transformable, stuffs into its own hideaway daypack, and has pockets deep enough for first-aid supplies, snacks, or extra hydration.

Kathmandu Adapt all-weather Gore-Tex wedding dressIf you’re planning an adventure wedding where inclement weather is possible, or if you just want a dress like no other, here’s what the Adapt offers.

Only one dress exists, and it’s a size 8. That accommodates a height of about 5’7″, a 32-inch bust, and a 29.5-inch waist.

The Adapt sports a blue merino lining and nearly 23 feet of water- and windproof Gore-Tex fabric. Plus, the train transforms into a hooded cape if your mountain-top wedding gets rainy.

And best of all (maybe), the Adapt is maybe the world’s most packable wedding dress to boot. It comes with its own hidden daypack that fits in the dress’s deep pockets. So you can easily store it before handing it down!

Of course, every silver lining has its dark cloud. Kathmandu currently only offers to ship the dress to New Zealand and Australia (where it’s based). But let’s face it, if you want a Gore-Tex wedding dress, you’re probably willing to go the extra mile (or thousand) to get it to your doorstep.
