Women are the fastest-growing segment of hunters and anglers. But sporting advocacy groups historically leave women underrepresented. Artemis is working to change that.
A new advocacy group in the outdoors, Artemis gives a voice to the sportswoman who hunts, fishes, supports public lands, and recruits new anglers and hunters into sport.
Founded by 10 women in June 2017, Artemis is a program of the National Wildlife Federation that launched to give sportswomen a unified voice. It has a goal of 1,000,000 members in three years.
Artemis: Women Speaking Up To Hunt and Fish
- Public Lands. Artemis wants to protect the health of, and access to, public lands. Accordingly, women from Artemis flew to Washington, D.C., to talk with senators about public lands, habitat, and why they are equally important to women and men.
- Iconic Species. Additionally, Artemis singles out mule deer and cutthroat trout as iconic species. “A lot of industry boom in these lands is taking massive lands of traditional habitat,” said founding member Kara Armaro. To that end, the group aims to speak up for anyone using these species for recreation and survival.
- Leadership. The group strives to engage and inspire sportswomen to become leaders in politics and organizations. “We give the tools that women need to become leaders in this space,” Armaro said.
