$1 Million Challenge: Trek Matches World Bicycle Relief Donations in Massive Holiday Push

Trek gets behind World Bicycle Relief, promising to match donations up to $500,000 now through the end of 2021. Donated funds help build and distribute Buffalo Bicycles, Trek’s 2021 ‘Bike of the Year.’

Today, Trek Bicycle and World Bicycle Relief announced a joint holiday campaign to further World Bicycle Relief’s mission of providing people in need with bicycles to improve their lives. Trek is a founding partner of the nonprofit, which provides specially designed bicycles to mobilize people in developing areas.

“This campaign provides the chance to help change the world, one person at a time,” said Bob Burns, Trek Bicycle vice president of advocacy. “A bicycle can mean the ability to achieve an education, access to healthcare, and even lead to gender equality because of the opportunities mobility provides. One bicycle can have a significant impact on many lives.”

Buffalo Bicycles: Bike of the Year

World Bicycle Relief builds and circulates its Buffalo Bicycles with those initiatives in mind. The sub-brand’s bikes aim to withstand rugged terrain on long-distance rides, with heavy payloads. Parts are optimized to be highly interchangeable among readily available options.

Local assemblers and distributors make Buffalo Bikes available to students, health workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs. World Bicycle Relief also employs trained field mechanics to facilitate quality maintenance in the communities it serves.

Trek played a key role in the development process that generated Buffalo Bicycles. In 2021, it awarded Buffalo Bikes its “Bike of the Year” title.

“Trek has helped us share the power of bicycles globally, creating positive upward economic mobility for more than 600,000 lives in the developing countries in which we work. Our team is humbled that they have chosen to continue to support our mission by naming the Buffalo Bicycle as their ‘Bike of the Year,’” said Dave Neiswander, World Bicycle Relief CEO.
