The world’s most famous rock climber, Alex Honnold, now has added commitments and limitations on his time due to the birth of his daughter. Some of us in similar situations have installed simple climbing boards to train on in garages, attics, patios, or in the yard. But, this is Alex Honnold. He goes big, or goes … home?

Climbing training boards were in high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, as rock gyms and even cliffs were shut down. Now, every commercial climbing gym has at least one, and often multiple versions, to satisfy seriously training members.

Alex Honnold installed what could be considered a commercial training center in his home. Undoubtedly, this helps him juggle the added responsibility of fatherhood.

One look at Honnold’s home training setup in this 2-minute video, and you will be fully jealous. The centerpieces are a full-sized adjustable-angle Kilter Board and Tension Board.

The home gym also has a spray wall, a Campus board, and a collection of hangboards. This amazing assortment is accompanied by free weights and a ping-pong table that the famous soloist claims is part of his warm-up. His home climbing gym also serves as a social center for his family and friends.

I am lucky enough to have a few boards in a shop on my property. As proud and grateful as I am for this setup, I felt a twinge of envy at his ultra-clean, uber-modern, and comprehensive collection of training boards and climbing walls. Well, no. I felt the stabbing pain of incredible jealousy. But I’m no Alex Honnold. In time, I’ll be happy for him. Maybe.

Just joking, Honnold. It’s such a sweet abode.
