The notice marks the second recall of NEMO’s Stargaze camp chairs in 2018. Here’s what you need to know to determine if it affects you.

NEMO Stargaze Recliner camp chair recall

NEMO Equipment and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued a recall for about 7,500 Stargaze Recliner camp chairs. The recall includes three models of the Stargaze line — Recliner, Recliner Low, and Recliner Luxury — manufactured on specific dates.

According to the brand, the plastic joints connecting the chairs’ poles can break, posing a fall hazard. According to the CPSC, consumers have reported 14 incidents of the chair breaking so far. No serious injuries have been tied to the defect.

NEMO and the CPSC recalled more than 15,000 of the same model camp chairs in February after reports of a strap failing. The current recall includes chairs sold at REI, REI.com, specialty retailers, and NEMOequipment.com between November 2017 and May 2018, priced at $180-220.

Here’s how to identify if your chair is part of the recall.

NEMO Stargaze Recliner Recall Instructions

Identifying affected chairs is a two-step process. First, locate the stamped manufacturing date on the BOTH of the black plastic brackets (where the poles connect).

Next, determine if the manufacture date matches the recall dates: November 2017, December 2017, March 2018, and May 2018.

If the dates match, you can verify the chair is part of the recall by the presence or absence of a punch mark next to the bracket screw. Turn the chair upside down and inspect the underside of the plastic bracket. Locate the screw and look for a small, circular punch mark beside it. (See below.)

If there is a punch mark, your chair is fine and is not included in the recall. If there is no punch mark, your chair may be defective.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chairs, but don’t discard them. Contact NEMO Equipment for a free inspection and, if necessary, replacement chair.

After the voluntary recall, NEMO released the following statement:

At NEMO, we’re an innovation company. We’ve always sought to push the envelope with new and unique products, and our design process often requires technology that never existed before. When we designed Stargaze Recliner we created a completely new way of sitting, with a hanging and swinging chair supported by molded hubs and an aluminum frame. Recently, we discovered a manufacturing defect in the molding of these hubs for three production lots. Though this is a limited number of chairs, any NEMO product that does not meet our high standards for quality and longevity is unacceptable to us. For this reason, we announced a voluntary recall of Stargaze Recliners that were produced in these three batches. Similar to the first recall of Stargaze, we came at this challenge proactively and reacted quickly, acting out of a desire to have the highest quality product in our customer’s hands.

Go to NEMO’s recall page and fill out your information. You can also contact NEMO customer service at 1-800-997-9301 or email journey@nemoequipment.com with questions about the recall.
