Arby's Offers Venison Sandwiches In 'Hunting States'

In honor of hunting season, Arby’s is about to do for venison what it did for roast beef.

Arby’s will offer the Venison Sandwich in select markets, and for limited runs, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 28.

The salt, pepper, and garlic-marinated deer steak sammie will diversify menus in six popular deer-hunting states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Overall, 17 restaurants will sell the Venison Sandwich, the only fast food chain item made from deer in the U.S. In 2014, Japanese fast food restaurant Becker’s released a Venison Burger to at least one rave review.

Thus, hunters exiting the field empty-handed with a craving for venison will have a new alternative to tag stew.

Venison Mass Market?

An Arby’s press release doesn’t note where the meat is sourced, but it’s probably not wild. USDA regulations require meat sold in the U.S. to be inspected and slaughtered at a licensed slaughterhouse.

There are deer farms in the U.S., certainly enough for a short run at a handful of Arby’s. But in a statement released by the fast food giant, Arby’s Chief Marketing Officer and Brand President Rob Lynch admitted “the venison sandwich is probably the biggest stretch for us yet.”
