Been waiting for e-bikes to hit a lower-than-ever price point? The wait is over, my friends.
Most readers will know the Razor brand for its scooters, which became a childhood favorite in the early 2000s. The company still makes plenty of scooters but has since expanded its product line (like everybody else) to hop on the e-bike bandwagon. Now, Razor has announced a new e-bike aimed at adults — for the shockingly low retail price of $999.
The Rambler 20 joins the company’s existing e-bike models for kids, which include the Rambler 12 and 16 models. All models can be found at Best Buy stores or on the Razor website (where the Rambler 20 is currently sold out).
The lithium-ion-powered bike is “stylish, practical, and affordable,” the company claims, offering the pedal-assist cycling sought after by more Americans every year. Admittedly, it looks pretty cool, with a retro-style frame, chocolate-colored paint job, oversized balloon tires, and a padded bench seat.
“We’ve not only made the Rambler 20 larger, we’ve also given adults the option to pedal, engage an electric pedal assist, or to rely completely on the electric motor,” Ian Desberg, Razor’s vice president of design and development, said in a press release.
Let’s see how it measures up to the low-budget competition.
Razor Rambler 20: Details
According to company specs, the Rambler 20’s rechargeable 37V battery lets riders cruise up to 16.6 miles without any pedaling. The balloon tires help riders manage rough terrain, while the 500W hub motor can generate speeds up to 19.9 mph.
It offers five levels of electric pedal assist in addition to the full-electric power mode. A dashboard display shows speed, battery life, and power level. There are also other expected bike features, like hand-operated front and rear disc brakes as well as an LED headlight and taillight.
Those last features are significant, however. At $1,100, Aventon’s Ride1Up Roadster v2 comes close to the Rambler 20’s price range, yet the single-speed bike only offers 350 W and lacks lights, a rack, gears, fenders, and disc brakes.
For another comparison, GearJunkie picked the Schwinn Coston CE Step Thru as the best budget e-bike of 2023. It’s a quality bike with a longer battery range lasting at least 25 miles. However, with a suggested retail price of around $1,800, it also costs nearly twice as much as the Rambler 20.
So if you’re looking for the absolute cheapest legitimate e-bike you can buy brand-new — this might be what you’re looking for.
