The FIS Snowboard World Championship has changed its location — and dates — due to the global pandemic.
The FIS (International Ski Federation) has been hosting its World Cup events since 1994. But this year, there’s more uncertainty around if, when, and where the world competition will occur.
With China buckling down on its travel restrictions, the FIS announced it would move the final location of the event from Zhangjiakou, China, stateside to Aspen, Colo. (Yes, the same mountain location that hosts X Games competitions.)
In the space of weeks, Aspen will set its stage for four World Cup events. The FIS World Snowboard Championship consists of three disciplines: slopestyle, big air, and halfpipe. Athletes who live outside the states will still have to travel — albeit not quite as far, and not to an area where travel restrictions have tightened.
Due to the location change and impending logistics, the dates of the World Championship have also shifted. The event, previously scheduled for Feb. 18-28, 2021, in China, is now slated for March 10-16, 2021.
