Starting in 2015, you may be able to purchase an unmanned aerial vehicle, known commonly as a drone, made by action-camera juggernaut GoPro.

The world’s favorite action camera will pair its lens and image sensors with its own line of drones, a move that will capitalize on the rapidly expanding market for videography shot from the air, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal.

Note: The WSJ article uses unnamed sources “familiar with its plans.” GearJunkie is working to independently verify the claim but has not yet received confirmation from GoPro.

DJI Phantom, a leading consumer drone made to carry GoPro cameras

Consumer quadcopter prices have dropped significantly in recent years, allowing more videographers to capture amazing perspectives. But until now, you’ve had to shop around to get a UAV to carry your GoPro.

Several current models, such as the Phantom 2 by industry leader DJI, come equipped with a gimbal to mount a GoPro. Others come with their own proprietary cameras.

Is there room for another camera-ready drone? In a multi-billion dollar market with anticipated growth in the civil markets, GoPro thinks yes.

The GoPro drone is anticipated to hit the market in late 2015. It’s not clear if the multi-rotor ‘coptors will have an internal camera or a gimbal to attach an external GoPro. But with an anticipated price between $500-$1000, we are hedging it’s the later.

We’re also guessing this will be on a lot of Christmas lists next season! We’ve reached out to GoPro to get details and will update soon.
