When you’re on a bike, at the gym, or out jogging, it’s rare you want to bring along your big insulated water bottle. Usually, they won’t fit in water bottle cages. They can dent or scratch easily around weights or if dropped. And they’re cumbersome and often awkward to hold onto or grab while you’re exercising.
That’s where sports bottles come in handy. They’re ergonomic, fit in bottle cages and cupholders, and have that handy squirt nozzle that streamlines hydration.
Hydro Flask isn’t new to the insulated water bottle game. The brand has built its name on high-end double-walled water bottles, thermoses, and cookware. But it is new to the sports bottle game. And it’s coming out of the gate hot with a brand-new style of bottle that comes in four colors.
Hydro Flask Insulated Sports Bottle: ‘No Sweat, All Chill’
“For years, we’ve noticed our consumers riding bikes around town with our bottles in their bike cages,” Tor Brown, senior global hydration category director for Hydro Flask, told GearJunkie.
“While we love seeing our products being used on the go, they were not designed to be used in bike cages. This is because the diameter and shape weren’t optimized for cages and the metal on metal could scratch the bottles. When we started the project, there really weren’t any stainless/insulted bottles on the market that served this purpose. And we knew we could answer a real need for our consumers.”
Knowing that its consumers were active, Hydro Flask saw an opportunity to innovate. The brand started designing a water bottle that would fit into exercise activities better, while still looking, feeling, and performing like the traditional Hydro Flask.
The result: Hydro Flask’s first insulated Sports Water Bottle.
- Material: Stainless steel
- Insulation type: Double-wall vacuum
- BPA-free: Yes
- Weight: 14.1 oz. in 20 fl. oz. size
- Available volumes: 20 fl. oz.
Pros
- Ergonomic grip
- Fits in bottle cage
- Cap is backward compatible with standard mouth Hydro Flask bottles
Cons
- Rigid, no-squeeze construction
- Mediocre flow rate
- Cap can whistle when sucking
Hydro Flask employs the standard 18/8 pro-grade stainless steel in the bottle’s construction, which the brand says outperforms plastic alternatives on taste.
The major design updates are in the shape and function of the cap. The leakproof cap and valve are designed so users can grab it, hold it, and drink from it with just one hand. And Hydro Flask made sure these bottles could withstand the abuse of hard exercise.
“To help prevent scratching or scuffing while in a bike cage, we also added our TPU sleeve technology from our coffee mug, which adds to that consumer experience while at the gym or on the go,” Brown said.
The new Insulated Sports Bottles from Hydro Flask are available in four different colors: Gogi, Indigo, Dew, and Black.
Like Hydro Flask’s other products, it claims the double-wall vacuum seal insulation will keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours. They’re BPA-free and fit all Hydro Flask wide-mouth bottle caps.
