‘Consumers should immediately put the coolers out of the reach of children,’ Igloo warned.
Igloo Coolers, in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), this week issued a voluntary recall of about 60,000 of its Marine Elite coolers. According to the brand, the coolers’ stainless steel latch can “automatically lock” when the lid is closed. This could result in a person becoming trapped inside, potentially posing a suffocation risk.
Igloo acknowledged it received one such report of a child accidentally becoming locked inside. The brand said an adult freed the child.
“We stand behind the quality of our products, and because your safety and satisfaction are our top priority, we wanted to let you know that we are voluntarily recalling the Igloo Marine Elite coolers,” the brand said in its recall announcement. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you. Our goal is to do everything we can to get you back out on the water using and loving your Igloo cooler.”
Igloo Cooler Recall
While the CPSC just listed the recall this week, Igloo told us the brand immediately issued its own recall notice back in March, when it first received word of an incident involving a child. According to the brand, the original latches were designed specifically to work in marine environments and withstand the rigors of motored boats.
This recall affects the following Igloo coolers:
- Igloo Marine Elite 54 quart (item #00049573)
- Igloo Marine Elite 72 quart (item #00049375)
- Igloo Marine Elite Legend 94 quart (item #00049574)
- Igloo Marine Elite Glide 110 quart (item #00034108)
- Igloo Marine Elite Contour 150 quart (item #00049573)
These coolers are white with stainless steel latches, made for use on boats and marine environments. Each cooler has “Igloo Marine Elite Cooler” printed on a label, along with its quart capacity. Sales of the affected coolers spanned from January 2015 through March 2019.
Igloo advised owners to immediately put the coolers out of children’s reach and contact the brand for removal instructions. Igloo said it is working with distributors to provide owners a free latch replacement kit. Those who have not received a kit can obtain one by calling 1-866-509-3503 or contacting Igloo online.
Igloo told us the new latch will perform in the same conditions as the original, but it will no longer accidentally lock when shut.
